y'all I'm so certain the biodome is about a kilometer/0.62 miles in diameter (they filmed on location at Durdle Door, so I'm pretty sure that cliff thing with the mini arch at the other end of the beach is supposed to be Bat's Head). assuming the ocean takes up half the area Grace has almost a hundred fucking acres of space to run around in. For context, Biosphere 2 a 3.14 acre surface area and only a fraction of that was used for human habitation

like imagine you're Ryland Grace and for the past 4ish years you've been living in a tin can with only the vague conception of a slightly larger tin can as your future home, and then after like, idk a couple months, maybe an earth year, your best friend in the universe pulls up like "grace home is ready, statement" and internally you're like "OK cool time to go see my next set of walls I'll be staring at for the rest of my life" and you get there and he made you two hundred acres (and half of that is actually navigable by you) of a biome that's not just your favorite, but he picked it because the first thing you told him about it is that it's always changing

I noticed that Grace likes to be bossed around. Not in like a kinky way (I mean, maybe who knows), but like if he isn't, he doesn't really know what to do with himself. Obviously, he can be independent. That's not what I mean. I mean that when he's in certain situations that he doesn't have strong feelings on, he gets conflicted and panics. Stratt would boss him around, and sure he'd pout, but it's mainly for show. He doesn't actually mind being bossed around. Same with Rocky, Rocky bosses him around and he puts up a small fight occasionally but most of the time he's completely content with being bossed around and I feel like a lot of people forget that it isn't a bad thing that Grace gets bossed around.

obsessed with the idea that Grace reasonably concludes that humans would seem like terrifying eldritch monsters to the Eridians (persistence hunters, can perceive electromagnetic radiation, unimaginably long attention spans) and Rocky's just like "ah, yes... can see how Grace might think this..." and then they get to Erid and the reaction to Grace is basically "Rocky find SPACE KITTY CAT?!! 😍”

300W of metabolic heat to disperse (three powerful old lightbulbs) just isn’t that much across the surface area of an entire Eridian, especially when the majority is assumed to be conducted away to atmosphere passing through their up-top vents. Dr Grace isn’t going to be feeling Rocky’s warmth on the other side of the habitat xenonite, just the xenonite’s usual steady temperature.

He can imagine it though. Psychosomatically.

i'm out of the loop on project hail mary but awfully curious about andy weir and ip laws in regards to the post about the author's barely disguised pet peeve??

there’s a scene in the book where a character is getting pointlessly sued for a bunch of media piracy (which she 100% openly did) that exists almost solely to make IP suits look frivolous while the character in question looks really cool and turns to the audience to say “piracy is fine.” and once or twice I’ve seen people make social media posts to the tune of “aw man, sucks that the audiobook for phm and/or the martian is audible exclusive and not available via my library” where weir has shown up to say “just pirate it.” I do have to hand it to him on this one I’m afraid.

The ship to Eridani!

i wanted the design to be based off both the Hail Mary and the Hermes, as if earth toke what it already knew worked long term and stuck with it. old and reliable technology as they say.

The crew is very large, so the ship itself is truly massive, since its meant to sustain everyone during the eight-year round trip + the time they stay on Erid. They dont use the coma systems of the mary because of the 1/3 chance of survival and, again, the crew is very big, is much easier to keep a large group in a small apartment complex sane than 3 people in a tin can.

Also, I realized later that the central wheel would need two different gravity modes: an "in-transit" mode, where the ship's acceleration acts as simulated gravity, and a "stationary" mode, for when the ship is in orbit. The wheel is the only part of the ship capable of maintaining gravity 100% of the time during the mission; so, the lab, gym, greenhouse, kitchen, and such are located there. Areas like storage, dormitory, and the mental health room—which do not require gravity—are located in the "Mary" section of the ship.
