I think the reason why An Xin works really well as a character is because he is supposedly this two-dimensional propaganda picture, the personalisation of values approved by The Communist Party™️; but personality wise, he's very similar to the crooks he fights against.

An Xin is charismatic and acts jovial. An Xin is stubborn to a fault. Unwilling to change for anyone. An Xin is self-righteous, and certain of his own superiority. Time and time again we are told, that his behavior, his ethics, his worldview is the only correct one, and An Xin judges hardly the moment someone stray's off the approved path. An Xin is distrustful. He is smart, and always looking behind his back. Because he thinks himself smarter than everyone else, he is incapable of truly trusting anyone. It might seem like he betrayed someone else's trust, but no! Actually he just knows better. He always knows what's good for them, even when they don't. An Xin cold and calculating. Willing to throw anyone under the bus for his goals. He is capable of great cruelty. He enjoys fearmongering, and manipulates people's emotions with no hesitation. An Xin is a hypocrite. He is very vocal against nepotism, but uses his connections whenever he deems fit. He hates having his hands tied by regulations, and gets out of then whenever he can, but when others do this, it's betrayal of the police force.

But it's fine. It's all fine and forgiven, because An Xin only uses these skills for GOOD! An Xin does not have to question his gut feelings! Because he knows what are the true values! Loyalty to his Party! It's fine, because An Xin is willing to submit all his wants and needs for a higher purpose. This is probably not the intended reading of the creators, but god, is it a terrifying one.

Conclusion: Fantastic character! A+ 💯💯 i fucking hate him
