random notes from the post-ep12 live:
Hong was a turtle that ascended into godhood (and a direct subordinate of Yu Jin's character). Ray Jiang mentioned this temple that has a turtle rock (the cap says Bilong Temple) that was taken into consideration. and that's why there's plastic and other junk on Hong's clothing 😢
Hao Wei did NOT make a wish (Ray Jiang repeated this 3 times). three requirements for granting a wish: cast a stone, SPEAK a wish, while a shooting star streaks across the sky
if given more runtime, Ray Jiang would like to show the story of Papa and Mama He, and how Uncle Hua became stuck on the island because of the wish he made (prequel when????)
pretty sure we all were thinking spiderman but the underwater kiss was supposed to be a tribute to All's Well, Ends Well (1992 Hong Kong movie by Stephen Chow. Leslie Cheung and Maggie Cheung are in it). it's available on iqiyi with very bad AI subs (in the US at least)
Is that why Hong has the little green mesh vest?!
Because it's his turtle shell?!

me watching western action films: the character survived being shot and driving their car off a cliff? pfft. so over the top and unbelievable.
me watching wuxia/xianxia characters survive being stabbed in the guts and then summon a giant demon sword from the sky and make it fall along with a rain of a thousand other swords upon their enemies: absolute cinema 🚬

FAKE FACT LIPS Episode 5
I almost feel bad about not talking about Fake Fact Lips more. But the thing is I find it really hard to be coherent about this show. I'm basically internally screaming throughout every episode. But let me try for a second.
The dialogue is some of the best I've seen in a while. The conversations are so ambiguous and layered and I feel like I'm always holding my breath in between lines. The characterisation is perfection. I feel like I know what these guys are gonna do most of the time (even when I'm screaming DON'T DO IT at the top of my lungs), and even when they do surprise me, it makes perfect sense. Like Zen being the one who finally broke pattern. Zen going to Osaka was already him putting himself at a disadvantage. Like, how would he even justify it to himself and Ryo that he went all that way and showed up soaked in front of him, just because Ryo said he wanted to see him? Cause the thing is, Ryo had been telling his truth for a lot of the time, but either he would go back on it by saying it was part of the game, or he said it in a way that it was understood that way. So Zen being the one to stop the cycle was the perfect way to ensure that it did. And it meant not only admitting to himself that the game didn't matter anymore, but risking it all if Ryo didn't also follow him down that road.
And as much as I've enjoyed these two competing for the "biggest idiot" award, I think it's great that this breakthrough happened when it did. Too often when a setup like this gets dragged it becomes tiresome or annoying even when it started off as exhilarating and compelling. And like I said, the characterisation and the script are strong enough that wherever the story goes next I'm sure there will be plenty of idiocy left to be done and more screaming on this side of the screen.
Also, just a final thought. The actors are doing incredible work. That whole scene in the hotel room was brilliant from start to finish.
