((You could always look at Homestuck and Homestuck RP if you're wondering about how characters interact when not face-to-face, most of the comic involves characters communicating via Pesterchum, a chat client.))
Mod:X Talks About Personal Experiences No One Cares About: The Blog
I used to RP with a shitload of Homestucks. Oddly enough, though, for something where many of the characters didn't meet each other face-to-face until much later in the series, that fandom's RPers sure seemed to be fans of magically teleporting their character to your character's location no matter how utterly imfuckingpossible it is for them to do so.
They were also huge fans of throwing monumental screaming shitfits when it was politely pointed out to them that they shouldn't know where the other character is or be able to get to them.
(Luckily that seems to have died down, for the most part, and all those people have moved on. It's a much better example now.)

Oh wait I wanna experience talk, too.
Personally I use pesterchum pretty regularly as my primary form of IC communication, because it's handy and also because it doesn't take up as much space as like, Skype and it doesn't shit out on me like a bunch of browser messengers tend to do. Also it doesn't store your personal information on it which I also like. You don't need an email to use it or other shit like that and idk I just think it's handy and great personally and I have to give huge props to the people who spend the time making and maintaining this program.
There's a couple rules though, to pesterchum, which actually carry over to regular roleplay:
Don't be afraid to block people who are godmoding.
Don't be afraid to tell someone OOC that your character is NOT face-to-face with theirs.
Or just ignore their face-to-face interaction and continue on as if you were just IMing.
You will regret random encounter, I promise.
