I'm five and I like boys by default; my mother dresses me in pink, my brother in blue and tells me I'll have a boyfriend when I'm older. I see boys on the playground and I try to kiss them, foolishly. They run away. I see girls on the playground and I push the sight of them in the back of my mind so I can think about them when I'm alone. But even when I'm alone I don't think of girls, any girl, because I'm a girl and girls think about boys. I'm nine and I watch girls like I watch cartoons. My eyes travel over their bodies and my cheeks turn red with shame. I try and stop my eyes from painting their bodies inside my mind but it's no use so I give in. Someone asks me why I'm staring at a girl "like that." I turn bright red, like the color of roses boys pick for me. I ignore them and tell myself I look at girls differently than how I look at boys. I just want to see how I'll look when I'm older. I just want to see how I'll be. I paint their body's in reds and pinks and yellows - I just want to know what colors I'll be painted in.  I just want to see the shape of a woman's body without wanting to kiss them.  I look at boys differently than how I look at girls. I look at boys. I don't look at girls. I'm fourteen and I preach that being gay is okay, but I'm straight. I'm straight. I still draw the shapes of girls in my head, but way back behind all the thoughts I don't want to think about.  Girls are friends.  I don't like them the way I like boys. I don't like them the way I like boys. I don't like them the way I like boys. I swear,  I don't like them the way I like boys.
