Evening in the dry garden
Pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) is a tall, exotic-looking perennial in the sunflower family, whose hardy, white blossoms with yellow-button centers are prized for dried flower arrangements. The luminous, white flowerheads combine with the pale white blush in the plant's lanceolate, alternate leaves to create an otherworldly effect, particularly when the plants mass in clumps. Pearly everlasting was used as a medicinal herb by Native Americans to treat a variety of ailments, from cold sores to rheumatism. The plant grows along forest margins and in open meadows in full sun and dry, gravelly soil. The photos above were taken along Middle Valley Trail in the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

The deciduous, clump-forming perennial Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' (switch grass) starts to provide a winter display as the steely blue-green leaves of summer turn golden. This vertical ornamental grass contrasts well with the foamy flower heads of Anaphalis triplinervis (triple-nerved pearly everlasting flower).

The display of small, white everlasting flowers of Anaphalis triplinervis (triple-nerved pearly everlasting) contrast with the upright stems of Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' (feather reed-grass). Anaphalis is an herbaceous perennial with white-woolly stems bearing greyish-green leaves with white-felted beneath, it will thrive in moist, well drained soils but dislikes winter wet.

The fun part about walking around in heavily disturbed environments post-development is seeing which native plant communities can hold their own against the invasive grasses and thistles. Here are a few nice ones among the sea of rye grass
