All my life I’ve been told I wasn’t fair enough. Bollywood movies romanticise actresses with milky white skin and advertisements tell me I need the latest and greatest in whitening creams. Even my family would tell me to try out home remedies and diy whitening after a day at the beach. It’s taken me a long time to get over my internalized dislike of my skin color, but I am learning to love it. Learning to love my brownness, and with it, who I inherently am.

I hate how so many people idolise flat stomachs like they are the only thing that signifies that you are healthy. I do not have a flat stomach, but i AM healthy. Everyone’s body is different they aren’t all flat stomachs and long thin legs. I also hate how you only ever see the perfectly tanned, markless boobs- not all boobs are perfect. They have stretch marks and unevenness, spots and they even get pimples. People need to know that everyone having one body type is not REAL.

Around 4 months ago, I discovered I was gender fluid (a non-binary gender) and never have I felt more free and happy in my own skin. It can be hard sometimes though, as I don’t think I look masculine enough. But that’s the great thing about this: I don’t have to look like anything. I get to decide. Time to celebrate me.

Being on tumblr for the last five years, i’ve learned a lot more about racism, feminism, and body positivity than I ever would in school. I think that’s the story with most of us. But regardless of learning about racism and body positivity I still hardly see people of color especially desi’s in the tumblr pale and aesthetic communities. I think it’s time we change that.
