jayfeather, rock, and time travel

rock does not like jay. he knows that jay has the power to change his fate, his siblings' fate, even the fate of the whole clans. desperate to keep jay in the dark, he is rude and bitter, holding onto the knowledge that he has and jay does not.

jay initially is incredibly excited about rock. he's the missing link between jay and figuring out all the mysteries of his time and the times that have gone before him. however, he quickly realizes that rock is not on his side, that he hates him, even. he bothers rock constantly, desperate for the information rock is withholding.

as jay gets more and more willing to fight against both rock and starclan, to find the answers he's looking for on his own and from any source necessary, rock sends him to the past.

he intends to shut jay up, to make him realize that everything is predestined and nothing he can do or find out will change his situation. after all, the ancient cats were destined to become the tribe. he sends jay as an observer, a witness, and he cannot interact with or change anything, to further prove how fruitless his effort is.

instead, jay comes back with the resolve to fight harder than ever, to not back down. after all, the ancient cats were destined to continue to lose cats to the tunnels, to their traditions, to rock himself; and yet they left. they literally chose their own path away from the old ways that were killing them.
