I think it was part of nature going crazy and sensing natural disasters before they happen in 3a. They also have something to do with the nemeton?? It was never explained in show and I never read any meta on it. Though I do know fireflies symbolize self illumination and guidance and the light in the darkness and nothing bad is ever associated with fireflies in mythology ever?? So since I'm pretty sure they have to do with the nemeton waking up, maybe the nemeton isn't actually that evil? Like it's suppose to be a god, right? Even some of the "good" pagan gods involved human sacrifice.
