so from my understanding, bruce’s parents were killed when he was around 12 (does that sound right? well it works for my thing so) which is about when his mother would have been preparing the celebration. Since theyre socialites, it would be the event of the season, people would plan their calendar around it. Bruce would be getting tux fittings, private lessons with the rabbi, all those sorts of superficial things to prepare
but at the same time, i feel as though at home martha would take a more gentle and urgent approach. she would stress how meaningful this coming of age is. how he isnt just her little boy anymore in g-d’s eyes, how he needs think twice. ask questions first, shoot second.
i’m a firm believer in the fact that bruce would use judaism as a means to get closer to his mother. and i think this is no exception. Part of a bar mitzvah is now being responsible for your mistakes, and i think this celebration, being so close to the death of his family, would imprint this message so much more firmly in bruce’s mind. he wouldnt look at the day as a society event, even as a kid. i think it would have been a somber affair for him, and he would have taken a silent vow to his mother to watch out for himself, avenge her, and always take responsibility for his actions. because after this day, she can’t protect him anymore, whether she’s physically on earth or not.
another huge part of coming of age into the jewish faith is taking part in ALL of judaism, including tradition and ethical practices. although he turned his back on his faith in a big way through his adolescence and up until he took dick in, i think his discussions with his mother would have stuck with him. in forming the ethical core of who batman is (no killing, social justice, good shit) he draws heavily from the tradition he shares with his mother, and tries to take some of her softness and use it to keep him sane.
in laying tefillin in preparation for his bar mitzvah, his mother would have taught him since his father can’t, he would have thought very carefully about what the celebration means. not as a party, and a piss up for the relatives (as my bat mitzvah was) but as one of the most meaningful and formative celebrations in a young jew’s life
