Not to be a terrible tech bro (comp sci undergrad), but the way this site talks about AI is so deeply reductive... Yes, step one is accepting that not all AI is bad and terrible all the time. But step two is accepting that you can't easily draw a moral binary between analytical/"good" AI and generative/"bad" AI.

HOPEFULLY. his tests are nightmares#that being said based on what i do know there's so much beyond 'one of these cures cancer and one of these makes deepfakes'#all kinds of ai have drawbacks as well as great uses#some more than others (as someone not fond of genai in most contexts) but..... you get the idea#don't even get me STARTED on the weird concept of ai virginity i see on here.... because of the environmental impact that ai and many other#technologies share. but people only care about genai because it makes ugly pictures#that's a reductive claim in of itself. it's supposed to be a joke but it's not funny#anyway yeah i wish people would stop making ugly pictures and also deepfakes and robot-written articles#but your concern isn't truly environmental unless you're uninformed or you're choosing not to care about all of the things you DO choose to#do that have an environmental impact#i concede that data centers and the training of gen ai models (different from plainly using them) is a different story and choosing#not to use genai so you don't increase demand and encourage more data centers to be built makes sense. esp since there's little to no reaso#to use ai when we got by without it just fine for ages (maybe beyond work. i'm a cs major not looking forward to the workforce)#but anyway. this is all coming from someone who doesn't use ai unless told to for cs purposes. not that that should make what i'm saying an#less true. because ai virginity is silly#but i feel the need to add that i hate genai in most contexts. part of me feels like i'm going against my argument in doing so and backing#out of it#but we also know how great this site's reading comprehension is. so. in case anyone's misunderstood. I AM NOT AN AI BRO#I JUST FEEL LIKE SIMPLIFICATION OF THE ISSUE IS GIVING PEOPLE A FEELING OF MORAL ABSOLUTES#*taps mic* *the mic rings and its overtones somehow communicate to you that i've been through mild psychosis#and general anguish#because of a strong need to follow moral rules that were not flexible at all in my mind when they really should've been*#and that could be harming people. i fear#join me next time where i argue for 'the other side' and talk about how genuinely screwed i would've been if llms were publicly available#and effective
