The AO3 ddos attack made me realize that we have a whole bunch of people who do not remember the Before Times, back when fanfic archives were dicey af and likely to be deleted/destroyed at any time, or purges took place on the regular to make "unsavory" fic disappear.
DOWNLOAD FIC YOU KINDA-SORTA LIKE AND MIGHT WANT TO REREAD ONE DAY.
I get that AO3 is a juggernaut but nothing lasts forever and given politics and all sorts of bullshit there always exists the possibility that you might lose access to it.
Also, authors delete fic. It's their right to do so, no matter how pointless and petty it is. They don't owe you, the reader, anything.
Sob story from fandom history:
I was in one small fandom where our fanfic archive was erased one day. When we set it up, which back in 2008 took a lot of time and energy to do, the person hosting it assured us (the mods) that her servers would stay up, that she would be available to help if things went down, that she was invested in the fandom.
One day the entire archive went 404 and she stopped replying to messages, emails, socmed tagging. Hundreds of fic, poof, gone.
(I now think it was a whole psyop thing she did on purpose, but at the time I was simply heartbroken and confused...and naïve.)
From what I can tell, most authors in that fandom ended up posting to AO3, but I also know for a fact that some did not. And there is nothing we can do to find those authors or stories, because the archive was deleted with no notice.
