Honestly, Bridgerton fans' obsession with making everything a popularity contest is so fucking stupid. It's giving baby's first fandom something FIERCE when people become desperate to step on a different ship to feel better about their own. Because that's what it is. I think it's so transparently obvious that when people say xyz is one of the less popular ships, what they're trying to do is elevate their own and like. . .come on.

Yes, this is inspired by seeing Polin in yet another 'two least popular pairings' poll, and I find the very idea that Polin is one of the less popular ships in Bridgerton to be laughable, but the truth is that this whole 'most popular' thing is laughable. It continues to be both a: pathetic, and b: nonsensical. Every ship has a feather in their hat for SOMETHING. Saphne has the most viewed season. Kanthony has an enormous youtube and twitter fanbase. Polin's Ao3 archives are ASTRONOMICAL- almost twice as many works as their runner up. Benophie has the most weekly visitors to their subreddit. Franchaela has what I can pretty confidently say is the largest archive of ship art.

We can talk ratings, but seasons are about more than their ships. We can talk polls, but we know so many of them are rigged by bots. We can talk views and 90 days reports, but there are political aspects to consider with who has access to Netflix or who wants it in the first place. Imo, I think the main arbiter of cultural impact is Ao3, but that's just one opinion in a slew of many. Someone could easily say the metric to look at would be youtube videos. Someone else could say it's Instagram likes.

Because what does it matter? Who actually gives a singular shit which pairing is most popular? What can you reasonably state is least popular? By what metrics? And why?

I've been in truly unpopular ships where there is just me and 5 other people in the canoe and had a grand old time. Popularity means nothing. Can we stop with the low hanging fruit of 'my ship is better than your ship!!!' and ranking bullshit and just enjoy what we enjoy?
