Today I watched the new Amy Winehouse documentary, and it was one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. There wasn’t an ulterior motive in this one as is the case with most documentaries.
The more facts you learn about Amy Winehouse, the more you realize there’s so much to love about her. From her incredible vocals to her genuine lyrics, both inundated with Soul. Her sarcastic humor and her impeccable desire for authentic music, from both other’s and herself. Above everything, she was a sweetheart. And my personal idol Nasir Jones can attest to that, along with many others.
I don’t want it to seem as if I know Amy Winehouse so well, because very few people on this Earth qualify for that. All I’m trying to say is this woman was truly talented and she was ruined. She was corrupted by people from the inside of her circle and from the outside (the media). The saddest part about the story is that, in my opinion, so much could have been done to help her before she became a truly broken soul. Fame can ruin people, and she never for a moment wanted to be “famous.”
We, as a society, behave so nastily to those struggling with mental illnesses, eating disorders, and drug/alcohol addiction, all of which Amy Winehouse was dealing with. And on top of that, she had to deal with it all while being under the microscope of the public’s eye, because she’s a “celebrity.” She was yet another bright star who was and is terribly misunderstood. I just wish people would appreciate her more.
