I'm about to attempt to convince my colleagues that students in the honors level English course should read Macbeth instead of Hamlet (the standard level already reads Macbeth - I have no idea why the courses aren't aligned on this).
Well, I think that in this current American political climate, Macbeth is waaaaaaay more pertinent than Hamlet. And maybe I'm biased because I've taught Macbeth a million times (and Hamlet like...once), but I think that culturally, we actually make more references to Macbeth than we do Hamlet.
Here is why I am biased and need help:
I didn't read/see Macbeth until I was a teacher, but I've read Hamlet at least three or four times, and I've seen Hamlet on stage and film, etc.
I LOVED Hamlet in high school, but I do not care for the women characters in Hamlet (and I LOVE LADY MACBETH).
Hamlet is fucking LONG. Macbeth is SHORT.
Macbeth and his wife FUCK
The honors level and standard level should be reading the same texts
But what d'you guys think?
In the year of our lord 2026, does it make more sense to teach Hamlet or Macbeth?
Hamlet
Macbeth
Nuance - explain please!
