Toby Fox is on a personal mission to make us all suffer...
Deltarune took my SOUL and beat it down over and over. Luckily, it did this while introducing me to characters I absolutely adored like Ralsei (who I wanna cuddle and cosplay as), Susie (eventually), and Lancer (kind of right off the bat). Deltarune was amazing and, dare I say it, has the potential to be even better than Undertale. To be fair, Toby’s HAS had 3 years to improve.
ALRIGHT, DELTARUNE THEORIZING TIME. I DIDN’T SPEND THREE HOURS HAVING FITS OF LAUGHTER AND TEARS FOR NOTHING.
Personally, I’m team-AU. Specifically, due to how casual everyone is and how some monsters legitimately don’t even know each other (with some like Sans even just recently moving into the down), I’m team AU-where-the-war-never-happened. Undyne not even knowing Alphys, Bratti and Catti hating each other, and Asriel being alive (HALLELUJAH) are big pieces of evidence for this. Also, while Kris seems to be the only human in town, we don’t know that for certain, and nobody really seemed to have an issue with their species. Hell, even Susie didn’t mention how they’re human, just how she hates people who are quiet.
Speaking of Kris, due to their clothes and that extremely fucked up ending, plus people apparently knowing Kris as the “creepy kid,” it seems that some others beat me to the punch with the theory that Kris is, well, CHARA, just given a different name, older, and proven to be naturally a bit fucked up. The idea of officially playing as Chara is definitely interesting, but it makes the fact that I called my creation “Chara” at the beginning...kinda awkward...
...Especially since I think that the entity that ripped out Kris’s heart, threw it in a cage, and brandished a knife is our creation. Now, I might totally have this backwards and Chara’s the entity, but think about it: if the idea about the AU is right, then there’s no reason for Chara to behave the way they did in the game. Plus, our creation would definitely be pissed after being discarded with the creator only to learn that their creator went on to control (may I say, adopted?) someone else? Sure, the beginning of the game is basically telling us that we have no choices, not even the illusion of choice, but this is TOBY FOX we’re talking about. That’s not the only reason he did that.
There’s a lot of other stuff I think might be revealed in story, but the rest of it is a jumbled mess and I literally just finished the chapter and wanted to get this all out while it was still fresh in my mind. Hopefully Toby doesn’t pull a BATIM and makes us wait Lord knows how long between chapters, though he did admit that the full game wasn’t finished...dammit.
