I LOVE giving characters names that foreshadow what will happen to them. Even horses 🐴 but I started wondering, how would Dream feel if he realized his horse's name foreshadowed its own death? Or would he know the meanings behind names? I'm just curious about this guy in general, I LOVE NW DREAM THANK YOU FOR MAKING HIM!!!!! 💛
Dream was gifted the horse Votum from the god of Creation so he didn’t name it himself. Dreamm does know Latin- but he probably hoped that wasn’t like a literal meaning for his horse. When he killed the horse I think he realized it was quite literal.
A lot of the gods naming schemes are literal. For example Inks real name is Encaustum or he’s also referred to as The Encaustic! Encaustum meaning the ink belonging to an emperor (in this case he is the ink owned by creation but historically it’s the Romans), and Encaustic being an art form that was common in older religious icon art in the 6th century. “Ink” is just a shorter abridged version of the shortened nickname “Enc” so he doesn’t really correct people because he doesn’t care and they have similar meanings.
The gods also named Fresh, his orginal name is Frech. Frech means cheeky, brazen, mischievous, bold- it’s a well fitting title for how the demon behaves. Fresh doesn’t correct people because he does personally think Fresh just sounds cooler.
So yeah Dream should have known better and expected his horse to be sacrificed. That’s kinda why next time he names his new horse Devioto- almost him claiming to the world that he’s dedicated to kill himself (and I guess this new horse) for his moral cause. Though it’s him who named it not an omnipotent god so like..it’s not garenteed that’ll happen he just wants to.
