To this Essek who is walking a path into darkness sure but also to a new young soul in his very first lifetime, not consecuted and a journey entirely his own.
This line has always been a favorite for good reason, but the animated show highlighted an aspect that was there vaguely in the back of my mind but never focused on too much. The word ‘birth’.
Krynn have such a complicated relationship with life and death and birth and Essek is even more complicated because he’s new. He’s new! This is his first life! There are no facets bleeding into him of past experiences, no old prejudices or maturities that come with trial and age. He’s new! It’s all him and himself is all he has. And he was not born as an Oathbreaker, a war criminal, or a selfish self-serving traitor. He was born as Essek. And Essek is new and naive and young (comparatively).
I’m looking forward to the future and what this statement will mean to this Essek, born into a very specific culture and religion, far far down the line when he believes himself to be completely in darkness.
