every time i french braid my hair, i have a little mini-memory of asking my mom to braid my hair and going into hair-brushing torpor bliss for about ten minutes, (unaware of mom's carefully hidden look of restrained panic) which would usually end with hands on my shoulders and a "Hey, miss M, why don't you call Sara and see if she wants to come over for dinner?" I don't remember ever consciously connecting those two things, but i do remember mom's relieved sigh when Kendra taught me how to french braid my own hair at a volleyball dinner.
