but in addition:

i was in high school orchestra from third grade through graduating high school. we played the canon in d every. single. year. sometimes at both concerts. i was also in the advanced string quartet in hs which went and played at town events sometimes. what song did we always have to play? the canon in d. my mother also got her hands on a piano duet version of the canon and made me and my brother play it together.

the canon in d is extremely boring to play. like so so so boring. and it goes on for forever. the cellos have 8 notes in the entire piece. the same 8 notes that repeat endlessly.

that is the entire cello part right there.

mentioning the canon to cellists will usually cause them to hiss and run away, or stare into the distance with a horrified expression as they relive every single time they’ve had to play the canon. i was a violist so i had a slightly better part to play (for once), but it was still tedious and dull and made me want to chuck my rosin at someone’s head (probably a first violinist’s).

hating the canon in d is basically an orchestra meme at this point, stretching back through generations of traumatized cellists.

Sometimes a bit of indulgence goes a long way towards getting me to actually write instead of just sitting there wishing I would. I've also (personally) found it helpful in the creativity department over all.

I don't know how to explain it, but pushing yourself through the 'ugly phase' when making art is the exact same feeling as pushing yourself through writing a difficult section of an essay
