I thought I’d share how I did the background in my recent Masquerade comic. As these are only web comics I do for fun, I don’t really want to spend the time painstakingly painting every detail. But I knew what I wanted this page to look like. So, instead, I used textures under a creative commons license and altered them to what I needed. Long post incoming
Here it is in its unedited glory! All of these textures are available at textures.com, formerly cgtextures. I’ve been using these guys for a while. You can get them for free at smaller resolutions and pay a premium for the big boys.
I was lucky that they happen to have a dedicated library of Venetian buildings but they have many more. These dudes help supply even big studios like Pixar, Dice, Valve, and others.
I got the fireworks from PhotosForClass.com and used it as a lighten layer to get rid of the black.
For the other larger textures, I used Krita’s oilpaint filter under the Artistic tab to take out a lot of that detail and to make it blend with my style a bit more. I was unable to use the same filter on the fireworks but ultimately felt they looked just fine as is. I also drew in some lights. Honestly I could have put soo many more things on the buildings, banners, fairy lights EVERYWHERE, and all sorts of carnival things. But I didn’t.
Most of them eye popping colors were thanks to a color dodge layer that interacted really well with the textures.
And the final result! Don’t think of using textures as cheating. Seriously. A lot of pros use them. Just make sure that you have the rights to use them and you’re golden. Hell, go out and take your own photos. You can even paint on top of them, using the texture to give yourself a good base. Just have fun and create. Thanks for coming to my ted talk
