Oh boy you can really tell this season's fucked up production played a major part in why ddba is so... broken

I actually really liked a couple of the 10 or so plot threads that could have easily been great single season storylines but instead got mangled up into some of the most contrived writing choices I've ever seen on television

And not to mention the incredibly one-note characters who got next to no development and serve as poor replacements for the original trio and dynamics we've spent three seasons growing to care about

In the end, it all leads up to a lackluster finale where practically nothing happens and there is no payoff for just about any of the loose ends scattered throughout the season

I hope season 2 is better... I hope

They have such a fun relationship dynamic! I haven’t quite figured them out yet, but I really like how weird they are. They’re a weird combination of really good together and absolutely terrible together. They’re so much more together (idk quite how to describe it- they’re not better together, but they’re a lot happier, healthier, safer, just really good for each other) but by extension they’re terrible together from the rest of the world’s perspective. They’re more effective together, so they objectively make each other worse. They’re basically “I can fix him” and “I can make him worse” existing at the same time! It’s so cool^^ They’re not abusive and if they were any other two people they’d have a pretty good relationship, but they’re both so fucked up as people and they’re so ridiculously codependent that you can’t call anything relating to them healthy lol. They’re that type of couple where they’re both really possessive, but they’re also both into it when the other is possessive (and they’re not threatened by others bc they have faith that the other would never cheat (also let’s be real neither of them are monogamous)).

I feel like Melkor helps Mairon be less uptight and less hard on himself, while Mairon cares for Melkor and reminds him to keep himself safe. I characterize Mairon as a control freak, and Melkor as an agent of chaos. I feel like the seduction of Mairon (basically Mairon being drawn to and eventually joining Melkor) was mostly Melkor slowly breaking down Mairon’s strict adherence to the rules and teaching him to appreciate chaos- before that, Mairon was the type of person who strove for order, but was secretly drawn to Melkor because he was strange and chaotic, and he found that strangely beautiful. Melkor’s also very nonconforming (and so is Mairon, in a weird way), and just a magnetic person in general (to Mairon atleast- most of Arda disagrees with him there lmao). Mairon and Melkor also shared the goal of remaking Arda, although I think initially they had very different ideas of what that should look like. And Melkor always admired Mairon for his skill, as well as how he simultaneously valued order and subtly challenged the status quo. (Also let’s be honest they’re each other’s type lmao). And Melkor is chaotic- while that’s something Mairon loves about him and he values, it also means he’s not the best at leading and planning. Mairon is able to keep him in check (for the most part) and help him be more effective. Also Melkor is aggressively adhd but that kinda goes without saying lol. When Melkor gets into trouble, Mairon is always there to help him. Basically Melkor is the driving force behind their efforts, while Mairon is the one holding it all together and making it actually work. Mairon and Melkor can be vulnerable around each other, which they really can’t be around anyone else (since Dark Lords can’t really show vulnerability). They both struggle with a lot of self-worth issues (Mairon more than Melkor,) and they have a lot of internalized ableism (especially Melkor- he becomes physically disabled later on and struggles with it a lot.) They help each other a lot with that- they’re the type of people to hate themselves for something then show their partner endless love and patience when they’re struggling with the same thing.

TLDR: They’re both so fucked up but they love and support each other and are simultaneously really cute and really evil and fucked up and horrifying. I love my blorbos :3
