Just saw the latest episode of Discovery.
Ash and Michael were cute.
Just focusing on the romance itself and stripping back the characters, the setting, and everything else happening in the story until you’re left with the bare bones, it looks like your stock standard hetro romance. Bland. Predictable. But stable. Dependable. Comfortable even.
But then you add everything else back on and its suddenly so much more.
Never mind asking how often we get to see a strong female protagonist, who is allowed to be both a competent professional, and allowed an emotional romantic side. How often do we get to see a strong black female protagonist, who is allowed to be both a competent professional, and allowed an emotional, romantic side?
And how often do we get to see an interracial relationship that doesn’t have a white person in it?
Suddenly the fact that the basic formula is bland but dependable is actually a massive point in its favour. Here’s hoping the writers don’t fuck it up by trying to do something new and fresh with the story line that just ends up making their relationship look unhealthy.
