Is this a cute? Idk where this came from. Had a little voice in my head that sounded like Eddie and I wanted to write down what he was saying, so...this happened. No context, unfortunately. Once I find context, I’ll probably repost this as a full scene. Probably from sometime early in their relationship but not as early as the last thing I posted for them?
“Jonathan,” came a currently unwelcome voice in sharp, clipped tones from somewhere near the door.
Jonathan ignored it in favor of continuing his work. Something was wrong with this formula. He’d checked it several times now but, for some reason, all of his test groups were failing. What was he missing?
“Jonathan, I—please look at me.” It wasn’t a question—he wasn’t begging or pleading, just crisply stating he wanted attention and Jonathan took a perverse bit of pleasure in denying Edward the attention he so desperately craved. (If you aren’t going to treat me like a person, Edward, I have no need to treat you as one, he thought, almost surprising himself at the viciousness of the words as they ran through his head.) It all vanished to be replaced with a hollow, achy sort of guilt filling his gut as Edward added, “I’m sorry. That’s what I should have said earlier, right? I…I’m an ass, Jon; I know I—” he cut himself off with a frustrated sigh— “forget I said anything.”
Dropping his pen and papers, Jonathan looked up just in time to see Edward turning towards the door. A flush had stained his face splotchy red and he was muttering bitterly to himself. He removed his glasses and called out: “Edward?”
Edward turned back and Jonathan thought he was doing a terrible job of hiding his emotions. Hope and fear were battling it out behind his eyes. He looked like he was half a second away from flinching from a blow that would never come. Jonathan was still uncertain how to convince Edward he’d never hurt him—that he was too invested in…whatever this was to even consider it.
“I’m sorry, as well,” Jonathan murmured. Edward almost immediately responded with a half-smile that made Jonathan’s stomach flop oddly. Any other time, that might have earned a half-hearted frown (because stomachs weren’t supposed to react to anyone smiling), but, at that moment, it was one of the best feelings in the world.
