just picturing ax pointing at the death note anime/manga/whatever adaptation going "YOU SEE! BOOKS ARE THE SUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY! WHY ELSE WOULD THE SHINIGAMI HAVE NOTEBOOKS AND NOT COMPUTERS!" 😂
Exactly!
Books also:
Can't be hacked
Can only be "deleted" with fire or lots of other physical effort
Don't contain ads
Involve permanent ownership
Aren't under corporate control
Are a permanent record that can't be edited without it being obvious that that happened
Retain all their value after several reads and several owners
Get exchanged freely between strangers
Have everything that NFTers act like they invented
Like, K.A. Applegate was onto something. Books really are the superior technology, especially when compared to an enshittified internet.
The Z-Pocket is an early Z-Space matter storage device developed by the Andalites approximately 98 Andalite Years before the start of the Yeerk War. It is primarily used by members of the Andalite Intelligence Division.
Comparable technology: Human Backpack / Fantasy “Bag of Holding”
Specifications
The Z-Pocket has been described as a 2-inch cube of crystal that glows a brilliant orange and is extremely hot to the touch. This is the normal-space extrusion of a larger piece of machinery sunk into Z-Space, roughly the size of a hovertruck.
Usage
The device can only be used by a single person at a time. It is activated by grabbing the cube in the user’s hands and concentrating on the cube, as if one were attempting to “acquire” it. The cube melts into the user’s hand and vanishes, linking the Z-space technology to the user.
Once this has been achieved, the user can store objects in and retrieve objects from Z-Space. This task is aided by another aspect of the technology- A running mental inventory of the device’s storage.
To store an object, the user must make physical contact with the object and “acquire” it. The object will vanish from normal-space over the course of a few seconds as it is analyzed and taken into the Z-pocket.
To retrieve an object, the user must “recall” the object, and it will re-appear in normal-space. Users are reminded that objects become subject to the laws of gravity the moment they are returned to normal-space, and the user must be prepared to catch the object when it begins to fall or ensure that the object will reappear in a safe location.
The quality of the recalled object is affected greatly by the speed it was recalled with. Unskilled users may find that energy cells and electronic devices are completely drained and metallic items are brittle if the user attempts to recall the object too quickly. A skilled user knows to be patient when recalling an object and to only rush the components that are not vital to the object’s function.
It should be noted that any object stored in the Z-pocket is kept in stasis in Z-space to prevent damage by vacuum or radiation exposure. While unlikely, it is possible that other objects passing through Z-space can interfere with the function of the Z-pocket (see Ascalin “Snapback” Incident, File DCSN-18 for related interference with morphing technology).
Limitations
Numerous limitations exist with this technology, and numerous cautions are advised
The maximum size and complexity of the object stored in the Z-pocket is dependent on the user. A cursory knowledge of the target item’s construction and composition is recommended to better guide the storage and recall process.
For large and complex items such as generators, forcefield projectors, or small vehicles, it is recommended that the user disassemble the object before attempting to store it.
The average upper limit for stored object size is roughly 1 cubic meter.
Additional limitations
Z-Pockets can not be used in morph. Interference from the Escafil Fields used while in morph prevents storage or recall of stored items. Attempts to ‘brute force’ the process have resulted in a number of incidents involving Escafil Field crystallization, trapping the user as a nothlit, or Escafil Field collapse, resulting in the user being sucked into Z-space.
Z-Pockets should not be used while in Z-space, as interference from the ship’s Z-space propulsion system may disrupt storage or recall of objects.
Z-Pockets should not be used on living creatures with high complexity, such as animals.
Z-Pockets should not be used to store the user in Z-Space. There is no known mechanism for retrieving a user from Z-space if they inadvertently trap themselves there.
Z-Pockets are limited to approved members of the Andalite military only on an as-needed basis. Unauthorized use may result in a loss of rank and discharge. Reckless use may result in exile or execution. All approvals are made by the Apex Level of the Andalite Intelligence Division.
