Andi Arnovitz - COAT OF THE AGUNOT

In orthodox Judaism, an agunah is a woman whose husband refuses to give her a religious divorce, thereby forcing her into a chained state: unable to remarry, enter into a relationship or have children. These coats are composed of hundreds and hundreds of shredded marriage certificates, a metaphor for the state of her marriage. Reassembled into bulky and enormous coats, sewn shut at the sleeves and hems, these coats allude to her trapped, hopeless state.

LINEN, PRINTED AND LACQUERED PAPER AND THREAD, 230CM X 260 CM

A black linen shroud has been embellished with tens of thousands of faces. Each face represents ten civilians killed in the Syrian Civil War. For each year of the war, which began in 2011, ( and continues until today) the faces become darker and darker. Over 500,000 men, women and children non-combatants have been killed. The piece, sadly, is on-going, with additional faces being added as the casualties continue to mount.

Societal pressures are making it harder and harder for little girls to retain their innocence. On the one hand, one sees the need to make up, dress up, sexy up little girls as if they were grown women. From the other direction we have fundamental religious leaders telling mothers to cover up their four year old daughters as if somehow a four year old girl is a sexual temptation. All of this eats away at a child’s innocence.
