Season 4 Observations - What the DS9 crew call each other
It's back! Today I cracked down on some data collection, and here's what season 4 revealed. My personal favourites have been highlighted, but I'd love to know what was most interesting to you!
For previous seasons, see here - S1, S2, S3, Garak: S1-3 To see the raw data, the spreadsheet is here. (If you want a preview of the Garak s4 data before whenever my s4-5 wrap-up might be, here's where to find it!)
<If you wish to be added to the tag list for when I next get some data done, feel free to ask in the comments!>
Sisko
First major surprise - Kira called him "Sir" (x10) more often than "Captain" (x8) this season! 4 of those was when he was severely injured in Starship Down, but even if you discount those, it's still a far more even split! (Kira's "Sir"s in s1-3: 8, 8, 4; "Commander"s: 35, 37, 14)
Worf heavily favours "Sir", using it 36 times in the season - a full half of them in his first episode! He also says "Captain" a lot though - 16 times, which is still more than any other character.
O'Brien still favours "Sir" as always, at a similar rate to s3 (17:10); Julian 's back to favouring "Sir" again, as in s1+2 (6:2).
Odo only uses "sir" when he's ashamed of himself in Crossfire - 5 in one conversation, and otherwise it's "Captain" every time.
Jadzia continues to use "Benjamin" (x15) the most, but "Captain" (x12) is a close second favourite - much closer than it ever was as "Commander"!
Altogether a very even number of "Sir" vs "Captain" used - though Worf makes up just under half of those "Sir"s. There were also many episodes where "sir" was not used at all - it's far more common when they're on the Defiant.
"Captain Sisko" continues to dominate when people are referring to him - and "Sisko" has totally dropped in frequency, falling from 17 in s3 to only 4 times this season.
Kira
Dax doesn't refer to her by name at all this season. AT ALL. It's devastating! (especially since Dax has been calling her "Kira" for 2 seasons by now...)
However, we do get a couple of notable first namings to make up for it:
Sisko calls her Nerys for the first time in Indiscretion, and then twice more - twice!! - in Starship Down.
Miles (and Keiko) call her Nerys for the first time in Body Parts. She also agrees to be called "Aunt Nerys" to Molly! (Miles only calls her it once, and refers to her as Major Kira a couple of times more, while Keiko instantly takes to it.)
Both of them call her "Major" at any other time, as does everyone else - apart from Julian, who calls her Major (x2), Nerys (x2) and Kira (x1).
Most people exclusively refer to her as "Major Kira", but the more familiar "Kira" is also used by Julian (6), Quark (3), and Odo (2). Julian and Quark both use it more than "Major Kira" (x3 and x2 respectively).
She's also called Nerys by Shakaar, twice, and by a Vedek Porta in Accession - notable because Nerys was so infrequently used at all in earlier seasons.
Odo
Really hasn't changed much from season 3, apart from Jadzia first-naming him twice rather than not at all. (Not a first time though - that was s2).
Sisko and Julian will most commonly call him "Constable, but everyone else calls him "Odo"; but everyone most often uses "Odo" to *refer* to him, if they refer to him at all. (Quark and Dax don't).
EDIT: Quark returns to his season 1 and 2 position of being the person to call Odo "Odo" most often (x8).
Continues to refer to himself most commonly as "Chief of Security" - 3 times across the season.
Julian
Again, not a lot of change. "I'm a doctor" is still his most common introduction for himself. (4 times, 3 of those in The Quickening.)
"Julian" is now very firmly cemented as what Miles will both call him by (x18) and refer to him as (x3) - almost exclusively apart from 2 "Sir"s and a "Lieutenant" in Hippocratic Oath (e4).
Jadzia also continues to call and refer to him as "Julian" near-exclusively (1x "Doctor"). However, neither Sisko or Kira have used it at any point this season :|
Everyone else usually calls him "Doctor", and refers to him as "Doctor Bashir".
Jadzia
Kira doesn't say her first name at all this season :( And she doesn't call her by any name at all! And awful season for these two...
For the first time since s3, Quark has referred to her as "Jadzia" - 3 times. Julian and Sisko also refer to her as Jadzia once each, and Julian is the only one to call her by name - 4 times.
SHE'S A COMMANDER NOW! HECK YEAH
And she gets called "Commander" by Sisko 7 times - the exact same number as Worf. In fact, Sisko more often calls her Commander than he does "Dax" (x2), which is a switch from the more evenly distrubution of s3.
O'Brien exclusively calls her "Commander"
Worf cycles through "You used to be Curzon Dax" (x1, e1), "Commander Dax" (x1, e5), and from then on, also exclusively calls her "Commander" (x7). He refers to her as "Dax" (x3) and "Commander Dax" (x2).
Everyone else still most commonly refer to her as "Dax".
Oh! And of course, as we've had in every season apart from the miserly s2, we get precisely 4 "old man"s from Sisko ;)
O'Brien
Continues to be almost exclusively called "Chief", and referred to as "Chief O'Brien". Julian gets the most "Chief"s in with 17, followed by Sisko with 12.
Sisko calls him "Mister O'Brien" twice, in keeping with s3. Worf also calls him that, but only once. Jadzia calls him "Miles Edward O'Brien" in a very sweet moment in To the Death.
Julian refers to him as "Miles" for the first time in Our Man Bashir ("But that's Miles!"), and then also once in Hard Time, and once, completely casually in To the Death. He calls him "Miles" once in Hard Time, as well as his full name in "You're a good man, Miles Edward O'Brien.". (This might not sound like a lot, but Miles' first name has only been used by one ofhis colleagues 7 times in the entire series at this point - Julian's sitting on 71%, and the only person to use it more than once!)
Worf
Introduces himself twice as "Worf, son of Mogh", and twice as "Lieutenant Commander Worf".
Is called "Mister Worf" by Sisko far more than anything else from the start - "Worf" is only used 3 times, twice where he's in the process of punching someone. "Commander" (x7) and "Commander Worf" (x2) are also used.
Odo refers to him more as "Commander" (x13), and occasionally, when more disrespect is needed, "Mister Worf" (x4). Miles also uses "Commander" most (x5), as well as "Mister Worf" (x3) and "Worf" (x3)
Jadzia uses "Worf" most (x8), followed by "Mister Worf" (x4) and "Commander" (x3). In total, he's called "Commander" almost twice as much as Jadzia throughout the series - Odo's use of it mostly causing the disparity.
Everyone refers to him most commonly as "Worf".

🏆 Season 4 Prizes 🏆
Talked to the most: Captain Sisko - the cumulative "Sir"s, "Captain"s and "Benjamin"s add up to him being addressed 151 times across the season! (Worf's 85 comes next - not even close!)
Talked about the most: Worf just squeezes out Odo here, but it's close - 35 compared to 33! Kira and Sisko tie for third with 32 each.
Called by their first name the most: Odo just loses out again - this time only by 1! Julian's triumphant here though, with a grand total of 29.
Uses first names the most: Jadzia, swanning in easily with 34. Miles comes next, his 18 "Julian"s helping him grab a total of 26 for second place. Julian is on a first name basis with the most people - everyone except for Sisko - but he doesn't use them often enough to even get a look in!
Refuses to use first names: Finally, a win for Odo! Worf falls short of drawing here, by using "Odo" twice in the season, while Odo sticks rigidly to "Commander", or "Mister Worf" (derogratory).
Most "first times": Kira - for getting called "Nerys" by two new people - Sisko and Miles - and for calling herself "Aunt Nerys"!
Most reliable moniker: This goes to Miles, who is called "Chief" 51 out of the 56 times he's been called anything this season (91%). Kira is a very close second, with "Major" being used 50 out of 57 times (88%).
