Fresh Start

Bucky frowned, watching Steve as he spoke. He let Steve play with the ring on his finger, figured it was Steve’s anyway. His frown only deepened when he heard what Steve was asking for. He didn’t understand. It wasn’t as though he never initiated. And besides, how would he know where the line was? He was afraid of hurting Steve. He wasn’t afraid of Steve hurting him. But if that was what Steve wanted, then he would try. He wasn’t sure how, but he’d figure it out.
He wanted to argue the point about Steve just being there to protect him. Of course Steve made him feel safe. And very often it did end up being Steve who held him rather than the other way around. But that didn’t mean that was the only reason he wanted Steve around. He had thought Steve knew that. Apparently not.
It hurt, he found, to hear that. But at least it was something he could work with. Steve could tell him as many times as he wanted that he didn’t just want the old Bucky back, but Bucky knew better. What Steve was describing, it was the way he described the old Bucky. But the thing was, Bucky couldn’t blame him. He couldn’t be angry. Hurt, sure, especially after Steve had just told him he wanted to start fresh and know Bucky as he was now. But then, it did seem like there was a lot Bucky wasn’t doing for him that anyone would just expect out of a functional person without being disappointed. So maybe Steve was right. And if he wasn’t, well, there was always his previous idea.
“I’ll be better,” he said softly. That was what Steve wanted, after all.
