The Scent of Blood
@andimwearingtights
The instant he pulled Steve off the table, Bucky could sense something wasn’t right. He hadn’t been exactly aware of Steve’s scent before he’d been shipped out, but he had learned very quickly what humans generally smelled like, at least in a broad sense. And Steve didn’t. He should have, but he didn’t. But he didn’t smell like a wolf, either. Bucky hadn’t encountered any other werewolves except the ones that had turned him, but he’d know the scent. It wasn’t precisely doggy, the way a real wolf would be, but there was definitely something wilder to it than a human’s scent. Steve, though...
Steve smelled cold. He smelled like earth and rot and death. Werewolves at least retained something of a human scent, but Steve smelled like a corpse. It was nearly enough to send Bucky reeling back away from him, had he not smiled, punch-drunk, up at Bucky like he was a goddamn miracle.
When Steve slurred out, “I thought you were dead.” Bucky’s first reaction was to reply, ‘You smell dead.’ But he kept himself in check and instead answered with, “I thought you were smaller.”
After all, he didn’t know how much Steve knew. They could deal with all of that later. Right now, all that mattered was getting themselves and the rest of the 107th out of this hell hole.

The wolf bared his teeth, keeping his head low. He didn't know this boy and that made him a threat. The boy was Not-Pack. Of course, it had been a long, long while since he had had a pack. He could only barely remember them, before the humans had taken him away from them. And before them, a different Pack. Human, but humans he knew.
The wolf knew he should be able to think like a human. He used to be one, after all, even if it was so long ago he barely remembered. But with the moon hanging full and bright overhead, the change had been compulsory this time. It was always harder to keep hold of himself then. To remember how to be human. But he felt the boy in front of him would have been a threat either way.
Dean lost Sam and Cas in the same HYDRA raid - the one that made him stick out to Captain Rodgers for the Commandos. Sam was part of the same division as him but Cas was Airborne - 101st - whose unit got stuck behind enemy lines on D-Day -1 and stuck with Dean/Sam's division.
He only has Sammy's pearl grip Colt 1911 and Cas' 'Angel Blade' (just a trench knife with the word angel etched into the hilt to signify him as Airbourne) to remember them by. That and their dog-tags - which he wears alongside his own
