The scottish privateer Andrew Barton

Like the English in Devon and Cornwall, the Scots had breeding grounds for smugglers, privateers and pirates, especially in the region around the Firth of Forth with the port cities of Rosyth, and Leith. Now the shipowner John Barton lived in Leith with his family. In 1476 Portuguese ships attacked his merchant ship Juliana. Parts of the crew were sold into slavery, the other part was put into a small boat. John did not want to accept this and asked King James III for a letter of marque. Soon after he got it, he traveled to Lisbon to make a legal case about his lost goods. But he was murdered and this caused one of his three sons to take revenge.

Andrew Barton, born in 1466, had a letter of marque issued to King James IV in 1507. He was very successful, so much so that his king even bailed him out when he was stuck in the Burgundian-ruled Netherlands for alleged piracy. However, Branton not only took aim at prizes - he also hunted Flemish pirates off the coast of Scotland, which quickly earned him enormous respect and contemporary chroniclers reported three barrels full of severed heads of the pirates he is said to have sent to the king. Now and then he went too far, as in the case of the Fasterinsevin, a ship from Antwerp. He captured it and was forced to compensate the owner and the captain.

Finally he was persuaded to support King John of Denmark in his fight against Sweden and Lübeck. Thanks to his help, Johann actually got the upper hand in the Baltic Sea and gave Barton a letter of marque to hunt on Lübecker ships. This did not seem to have been in the mind of Bartin, who grabbed the Jenny Pirwyn, a gift from James to Johann, and left Johann's service without permission, to continue his own business.

In 1511 he was with the Jenny Priwyn and the Lion looking for more prizes when he came across with the ships of the english Admiral Sir Edward Howard and his brother Thomas Howard. At the end of July or August there was a battle in which the Lion was boarded and the Jenny sailed away. However, Andrew Barton, who was on the Lion, was killed. Supposedly it was an English archer who ended his life. After a short hunt the Jenny was brought to England together with the Lion. Both were two impressive ships with about 36 guns on board and was taken into English service. The Lion was sold in 1513 and the Jenny followed a year later.
