okay my dear sweet Sabbat pack that I'm very fond of come from the Clan Lasombra trilogy of books, which primarily focus upon Lucita de Aragon and her transformation from a mercenary unaligned in the sect wars, to a Sabbat Archbishop. the books also deal with a subplot regarding the clan Founder and if it is potentially still "alive" and biding its time within the Abyss
but MY favorites are the Hunting Pack that go to retrieve Lucita and bring her to the Sabbat leadership. they're a grab bag of Lasombra who got stuck with that shitty job, and they spend a lot of time bickering, arguing about Path of Enlightenment philosophy, hating each other, and protecting each other. they are led by the Ductus Andrew Emory, who is canonically disabled and uses Obtenebration to make shadow tendrils that help him be more mobile. he's clever, lies a lot about how much planning he actually does, used to be a punk anarchist intellectual in life, and presently is a huge bully to his pack. there are hints that he's gay or bi. my Storyteller picked him for my Fledgling Lasombra's Sire, so I feel very fond of Andrew, even though he's awful 😅🖤
so yes, my very obscure blorbi are a handful of side characters from a trilogy of books written 20 years ago, based upon a slightly known tabletop rpg system 😎
(The books do have a lot of flaws. There's so much casual misogyny and ableism, I think the author struggles to depict heightened emotions, and I think the ending to the whole trilogy is pretty weak)
That said, reading the books was helpful for my insomina nights. I took a lot of screenshots while reading so I could share them with my Storyteller and discuss clan Lasombra culture and values, as well as get characterization for my PC's Sire. I could go on~ there are Vaulderie rituals, discussion of the Path of Night, an international road trip to interview some 5th generation vampires, a shopping trip, Montano is there, etc etc
So, being an old school WoD novel fan, it really bugs me that the Shadows of New York game’s MC Julia is pretty much a carbon copy of Andrew Emory—right down to being a bitter, take no prisoners investigative journalist, only she’s female (cool) and queer (awesome!)…
They left out a key part, though. Andrew Emory was paralyzed from the waist down. It was another part of his sire’s ritual hazing prior to the embrace. She orchestrated the accident that paralyzed him, she manipulated the surgeon so he botched the surgery to fix his legs, and Andrew grew progressively more bitter over the years (from people pitying him + having to deal with lack of accessibility, which I extremely identify with), but also more self-assured and determined at the same time. There’s some problematic aspects in that backstory given the whole Lasombra MO, yes, but what I liked about it was he never fixed himself even though he was surrounded by Tzimizisce who could do whatever to his back and legs. The most he did was use his powers to form “shadow stilts” to lift himself up and freak the hell out of people in combat. Mostly he took advantage of people assuming he was weak, and eventually became Bishop of Portland that way.
I really love him as a character because it’s so rare to see badass disabled characters is what I’m saying, which is why it’s so disappointing that they were lazy enough for the V5 Lasombra visual novel DLC to just copy him as a character but remove what made the concept most interesting. But hey, Julia sure is sexy! And how bout that meme Malkavian NPC! Ugh.
…I’m gonna have to write him into my VtMB retelling, aren’t I?
