Today is a very cool day on The Newsreader calendar!

We are celebrating the birthday of the King Of 1980s News today; Mr Dale Jennings! ❤️🌟🎂🎉
It was fantastic getting a date of birth for our male lead in S03E03. His 35th birthday party was held on Sunday 4th June 1989, meaning that Dale was born on this day in 1954. Today in 2025, he would be turning 71 years old!
His birthday bash in 1989 was one to remember. It was a semi-formal event, where almost everyone he knew was invited, including his mum, Noelene, Rob, Kay, Dennis and the CEO Richard Bertrand. Helen was invited but wasn’t able to come, and of course, there was one person who never received an invite to begin with 😉
Aside from the showdown with the uninvited party-crasher, one of the cool things that happened at Dale’s 35th birthday was that a home video camera was taken from guest to guest, and their birthday wishes were recorded, as a memory for Dale - and us - to look back upon. Val’s was so sweet, commenting on the lovely cake and how it was lovely to see all his friends, and Donna playfully teased at his new “King of News” title; gifted to him by Kay! Kay and her friend warmly cheered “Happy Birthday, Mr Jennings,” and Richard wished Dale many happy returns and told him to keep up the good work.
Although his birthday party was cut short due to developments in the Chinese student protests in Tiananmen Square, he did appear to have a lovely day, and let’s hope that he would be celebrating his 71st today joyously, wherever he may be in the world. Happy birthday Dale, from Newsreader fans from the future! 🤴🏼
As for Helen, she doesn’t have an exact date of birth, however she was born in 1950, and is an Aries (confirmed by Em Rusciano and Michael Lucas on Emsolation Extra), so she would have been born in late-March through to mid-April of that year. That being said, stay tuned for Saturday. There may be an important birthday to celebrate for Helen after all! 😉💖

One of the many beautiful faces that accepted The Newsreader’s trophy for Best Drama Series at the 2026 AACTA Awards was Hunter Page Lochard, who himself won Best Supporting Actor for playing Lynus Preston in Season Two at the 2024 Awards. It was wonderful seeing him among our AACTAs team!
Hunter and Michelle Lim Davidson went on stage twice that evening; once for The Newsreader, and then again when Play School won their award for Best Children’s Program. These two Newsreader stars are also presenters on Play School together too! The award was accepted by the Play School producer Bryson Hall, and Hunter, Michelle and Bryson were joined by fellow presenters Leah Vandenberg and Luke Carroll.
The Play School team were so overjoyed to receive this award, especially considering the milestone Play School is celebrating this year. Play School is Australia’s longest running children’s show, starting in July 1966, and in 2026, Play School is celebrating its sixtieth birthday. Sixty years of quality children’s educational programming presented through play, creativity and genuine inclusion and advocacy, it is truly a massive achievement, and Play School has raised many generations of Australians on screen.
Hunter and Michelle are a part of the current group of presenters that have become household names to modern Australian families, and we even have a third Newsreader connection within Play School. Andrew McFarlane, who played CEO Richard Bertrand in Season Three, is a Play School presenter too, and I grew up watching him during my childhood in the 2000s! I also have Play School’s ‘Blue Book’ from 1974, which my Mum nd Aunty had when they were little. Play School is truly a show that has spanned generations.
Did you have a favourite Play School presenter growing up? Mine were Leah, Justine, Noni, Andrew and Rhys! ❤️
Miss Kay Walters at Dale’s birthday bash 💜🌟🎂

We might be celebrating Dale’s birthday here at News At Six 1986 for the next week, but we must also acknowledge that today is a Newsreader star’s actual birthday!
Today, it is the birthday of the incredibly beautiful and talented actress who plays our Kay Walters, Ms Philippa Northeast!
We have been so fortunate to have Philippa playing our Kay Walters for the past two seasons. It has been incredible seeing Kay grow since she joined the show in Season Two and 1987, from a troubled young woman in the midst of addiction with a complex relationship with her parents, to a confident, creative lady who was ready to show the world her flair and style.
To me, Kay’s story ended the way it was meant to be - paving her own creative path and returning to her fashion designing, making hard decisions to make sure the effort she put into keeping healthy was not unravelled, and also realising that she could embrace the Walters name and the opportunities and influence it gave her too. She could be unique, inventive, strategic, powerful and talented; anything that she could put her mind to.
Philippa is the warmest lady who knows how to get to the heart of the characters she plays and portray both their highs and their lows. I feel so fortunate that Mum and I got to meet her and her mum earlier in the year. It was truly the highlight of attending the Season Three premiere for us!
Happy birthday, Philippa, from Newsreader fans everywhere! Please enjoy this photo album of Kay Walters throughout the years in celebration of Pip! 💜🌟🎂
