line readings of all time (grabbed from here)
time for another round of Ashur's dominoes!
the historical Gabinius is most known for passing the Lex Gabinia, a law which granted Pompey extraordinary military powers in order to fight the rising threat of piracy. we saw Gabinius and Pompey beginning to make such plans in the last episode—
GABINIUS: If my voice could move Senate towards your desires, then perhaps yours could lend support to those of Crassus. POMPEY: Perhaps. GABINIUS: Such an agreement would first need to see respective armies dissolved outside the gates of Rome, a contingent from both dispatched to at last address mounting Cilician threat. POMPEY: They have become rather bothersome. GABINIUS: And I would see them all nailed upon cross for offense against beleaguered citizens, those closest to me among them.
now that Gabinius has met an untimely end in this timeline (at the hands of Ashur, no less—he's the proverbial bull in the AU china shop!), the Lex Gabinia will (likely) no longer come into being. history nerds, what sorts of repercussions might that lead to as we venture deeper into alternate history territory? the possibilities are endless!
more immediately, will Gabinius' death be blamed on the Cilicians, Capua’s go-to scapegoat? will Pompey be laying low until the whole sordid affair blows over? how will Ashur weasel out of this one?
(and speaking of the Cilicians, they have been mentioned in every episode of the season—they were the talk of the town well before Caesar's staged attack in the market—but we have yet to actually see them. i wonder if they'll be making an appearance soon... imagine if they were to, say, attack the arena during Achillia's big match against the Scythian—that's the sort of bedlam we are accustomed to seeing in finales!)
Let's all use and abuse and kill Pompeius, thanks Gabinius.
