EXHAUSTION OVERTOOK THEM, yet natalya remained awake, if only to observe andrei through half-shut eyes ; never had they been so close, she thought, but said nothing, unsure whether he even resisted sleep as she did or whether he had slipped away into some dream before she could pay attention. natasha smiled –––– that of a smile apart from any he had glimpsed on her, one which both revealed and hid her misfortune –––– and interlaced her fingers amongst his hair, offering him light touches and the promises of adoration they expressed. she hummed something, a song whose words at such late hour natasha could not remember, and closed her own eyes. ❛ andrei ? ❜ natasha did not dare raise her voice above a whisper, unsure whether she hoped him asleep or awake. ❛ are you content ? ❜ / @andreynikolayevich

KISS IN THE RAIN. suggested listening found x
IN HUSHED VOICES, THE UNION had been discussed as indications of his recovery had, unhurriedly, presented themselves. whispers swirled above and around them ; the rostovs shared amongst themselves quieted conversations questioning if andrei might love her again, or moreover, love her still ; marya and sonya, it was later discovered, had discussed at length the possibility, each possessing such great knowledge of one party or the other. but what none had supposed was the offer andrei had made. and though she longed to receive his offer, and longed greater still to be his wife, natalya had made no assumption in her aspect to indicate his offer or her acceptance.
THEY TOOK WALKS AROUND THE surrounding land, prolonged walks each with several rests ; it had been suggested for andrei not to remain in such dismal, cramped quarters as he progressed. natalya, without much discussion, insisted on the role of andrei’s companion for his walks, only upon occasion allowing marya the task. there was not often much discussion on such walks, either, but while they rested, she would ask her once betrothed good-natured questions. natalya had forever prided herself on her capability to maintain composure when listening to war tales . . . but to listen as andrei related stories to her of dying men & bloodied ground was unnatural even to natasha.
ON RETURN FROM SUCH A WALK, natasha glanced over at andrei and made an attempt to observe where his change had manifested –––– his childlike eyes & distant smile –––– her heart again felt that happiness he had made such note of upon their first meeting. natalya had grown still with observing him ; when it first began to rain, she would have never known if not for the startled look andrei wore. she smiled to see it. she breathed out his name, a loving and reverent ❛ andrei, ❜ and he turned to look to her. they had been so near that he had scarcely turned at all. natalya smiled at him through the rain for a brief moment before she kissed him, softly and with great care ; she placed a soft hand upon his cheek and failed from keeping down her smile and all her fears, satiated by their closeness, began to die away.
@andreynikolayevich: I've only seen like 20 minutes of that adaptation because I couldn't get past how miscast everyone was
i relate lmao. the only clips i’ve seen are ones with audrey in them because i love audrey and because i love natasha. but i think that there’s a strange assurance that audrey’s natasha has to her character, and though i think that natasha certainly changes throughout the narrative, i think that believing herself to be right is a constant of natasha and i really love that audrey brings that out. i also like the mannerisms in the balcony scene so i’m majorly conflicted :/
@andreynikolayevich : this is 100% my headcanon too
as barbara hamby wrote in toska, i still haven’t forgiven natasha for marrying pierre, not actually for marrying him but for being happy with him. and in a lot of ways i agree, especially with her following line, how could she, after prince andrei ? it’s not even so much a question of great loves versus domestic romance. it’s so much more this constant painting of natasha that is especially prevalent in the 1956 and 2016 adaptations, in which her final scene on screen is always one where she seems to just complacently be existing in pierre’s world ? bbc 2016 does a much better job, because there’s minimal physical affection and it seems less a matter of her being vehemently in love and more just of complacency, but still like ??? i could meta for days about how there is no way natasha would just suddenly “come to her senses” with age and then suddenly love pierre. they respect each other but that’s a much different thing than being actively –––– even domestically –––– in love with someone.
