The Pace Report: "Remembering Mr. Jobim" The Vinicius Cantuária Interview
Percussionist, guitarist, vocalist and composer Vinicius Cantuária was in NYC recently performing music from his latest Sunnyside Records release, "Vinicius canta Antonio Carlos Jobim," at the Jazz Standard featuring Dende on percussion, Adriano Santos on drums, Paul Socolow on bass, and the great Helio Alves on piano.
Vinicius's latest CD is a tribute record acknowledging and paying tribute to one of his musical hero's as well as mentor, composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. It was the legendary Jobim that encouraged Vinicius to move to New York City over 25 years ago to pursue music as well as his passion. Both Jobim and Vinicius hail from the country of Brazil and during the composer's career he pinned some of the most prolific songs/compositions like "Wave," "The Girl From Ipanema," and "How Insenstive."
In the time Vinicius lived in New York he recorded and toured with the likes of Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, and Brad Mehldau. I had the chance to speak with Vinicius candidly about how important Jobim's music is in jazz as well as his native country of Brazil, his musical influences, and him moving back to his country changed him musically.
