The Pace Report: "A Pianist's Tale" The Benny Green Interview

Pianist and educator Benny Green came to New York City in the early 1980's during what was hailed in jazz music as the "Young Lions" period. This was era when musicians from the ages of 18 to 25 earned their stripes playing behind the great luminaries of jazz music and these musicians like Cyrus Chestnut, Javon Jackson, The Harper Brothers, The Marsalis Brothers, Jeff Watts, Robert Hurst, Geri Allen, Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Lewis Nash and others get their training on the bandstand. In addition to their "on the job" training, these musician, like Benny, have and are leading their own bands but are still on the front lines educating and conducting clinics to help pass this music and theory down to the next generation of jazz musicians and students.

Benny Green hails from Berkeley, California and was exposed to jazz by his father when he was a kid. During his time in New York City he was blessed to record and tour with vocalist Betty Carter, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, Gary Bartz, Etta Jones, Bobby Watson, and Oscar Peterson. Benny was also mentored by the great Walter Bishop, Jr.

He's currently a Professor at the University of Michigan along with bassist and former "Young Lion," Robert Hurst.

Benny's latest CD "Live at Santa Cruz" is available on Sunnyside Records and was recorded live at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, California. It was at Kuumbwa that he recording as a sideman for Ray Brown at 21 for his live record.

I had a chance to speak with Benny recently during his week stint at the famed Birdland Jazz Club in New York City to reflect on his time in New York in the 1980's, him being a Professor of Music, and how he's perfecting his life as a pianist.

The Pace Report: "Remembering Mr. Jobim" The Vinicius Cantuária Interview

Percussionist, guitarist, vocalist and composer Vinicius Cantuária was in NYC recently performing music from his latest Sunnyside Records release, "Vinicius canta Antonio Carlos Jobim," at the Jazz Standard featuring Dende on percussion, Adriano Santos on drums, Paul Socolow on bass, and the great Helio Alves on piano.

Vinicius's latest CD is a tribute record acknowledging and paying tribute to one of his musical hero's as well as mentor, composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. It was the legendary Jobim that encouraged Vinicius to move to New York City over 25 years ago to pursue music as well as his passion. Both Jobim and Vinicius hail from the country of Brazil and during the composer's career he pinned some of the most prolific songs/compositions like "Wave," "The Girl From Ipanema," and "How Insenstive."

In the time Vinicius lived in New York he recorded and toured with the likes of Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, and Brad Mehldau. I had the chance to speak with Vinicius candidly about how important Jobim's music is in jazz as well as his native country of Brazil, his musical influences, and him moving back to his country changed him musically.

The Pace Report: "Get Ready For Freddie" The Freddie Hendrix Interview

Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report featuring trumpeter and educator Freddie Hendrix. For well over 20 years Freddie has been one of the most in demand session musicians in New York City backing and recording for the likes of Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, The Count Basie Orchestra, The Chrisitian McBride Big Band, Nicholas Payton, and Oiliver Lake.

After years of being a proflific educator, dedicated family man, and session musician, Freddie just released his debut solo record "Jersey Cat" on the Sunnyside Records label. The album features Bruce Williams on Alto sax, Abraham Burton on tenor sax and flute, David Gibson on Trombone, Brandon McCune on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, and the great Cecil Brooks III on drums.

Freddie and I sat down before his set at The Jazz Standard to talk about his origins growing up in Teaneck, his experiences as a session musician, and taking a great leap of faith to become a lead guy.
