Nova Launcher Killed by Parent Company
If you’ve ever used a third-party launcher to replace the home screen on your Android device, you’ve probably at least tried Nova Launcher. Despite tens of millions of downloads, Nova Launcher development is shutting down.
Nova Launcher has been around since 2011, dating back to Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich days. The app was founded by Kevin Barry and has been developed by him ever since. As of 2022, though, Nova Launcher had been acquired by Branch, a metrics company. In 2024, things were looking rough as nearly the entire staff was laid off, leaving only Nova’s original founder to run the show alone.
At this point, though, it looks like things are done.
In a new blog post, Kevin Barry explains that he has been “asked to stop working on Nova Launcher.” This leaves the launcher, which is still available on the Play Store, in limbo and without a clear future. Barry says that along with this end to active development, plans to open source Nova have also ended.

I myself have now switched to Pear Launcher because it let me change the folder icons to a custom one. It also replicates a lot of the look and feel stuff of Nova.
posting this here to hopefully give the issue & petition some more reach:
Google is going to close down Android.
What this means is that Android at the moment allows users to download and install apps not just from the google play store but from any outside source. this includes, but isn't limited to, self-coded apps you distribute privately to your friends and family, apps that no longer exist on the play store but that you have the file for, apps developed by creators that can't afford or don't want to out their apps on the play store and more. this website explains it much better than i can.
BUT this is going to change.
Google has announced that on September, 1st 2026 they are going to close down these options. Much like with Apple's app store to get listed on there developers will have to pay Google, get verified by them (via governtment verification!!) & have to agree and adhere to Gooel's terms and conditions.
This is where the petition comes into play. Obviously, there is no guarantee for us to get Google to stop this. But we can try & with enough people backing this petition & giving it enough publicity, there is a chance.
So, consider signing this, even if you're not sure this applies to you or would even bother you at all, because this isn't just about this specific issue.
This concerns us all, because in the end this is about control & power. Over developers AND users.
Google are flexing their power to control who gets to share what with a wide variety of people. One day they're going to delete an actually harmful app (which, let's be honest, they haven't been very stringent on) and the next they're deleting apps because they don't fit a regime's propaganda.
btw if you just got the new android update and want it to shut the fuck up about the Now Brief bullshit you gotta go into settings -> security and privacy -> more privacy settings -> toggle off personal data intelligence. ur welcome.
Aboutta let gang know that i fw with android 3.0 (aka honeycombo) like look at this OS,what a badass.

The US anti-trust courts have begun the process of decreeing that Google or Alphabet must divest itself of the Chrome browser-engine and the Android operating system.
Jokes are beginning to make the rounds on the internet that The Onion ought to buy Chrome, too. And maybe also Android, to boot. ___
Hi everyone! I’m Sebastian, the developer behind Flashes for Bluesky - … Sebastian Vogelsang needs your support for Help Bring Flashes for B
I'm so ready to get rid of Instagram.
Help bring the flashes app to Android!
Wondering what Flashes is? Click here
did you know that you can install Android on a standard PC
i wouldn't recommend it:
it randomly rebooted several times, even with 4GB of RAM
it's kind of slow on "generic" graphics hardware
mouse input "mostly" works, but clicks are ignored sometimes
...but. well. you can.
(also it swaps red and blue, which is why the firefox logo looks strange here.)
