I went and played through the easy route of Star Fox 3D this morning. ...Titania is actually a very difficult level. Probably because I rarely ever see it and my memories of it were very vague.

According to the official Japanese guide for Star Fox 64, Pigma is the true mastermind behind Star Wolf in 64; Wolf was just a pawn being manipulated by him.

Pigma betraying James and Peppy also wasn't just a random betrayal, he had a pre-existing relationship with Andross from his time working at the Corneria Defense Force Scientific Research Institute.

Andrew is also not well-liked by the other members of the team, but Andross made Pigma babysit him, and Andrew's connection to Andross provides the team with "immeasurable financial and technological backup".

This explains why both Pigma and Andrew were picked off the team between 64 and Assault; with Andross gone, Pigma was no longer able to manipulate Wolf, and there was no reason to tolerate Andrew anymore either.
