365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #132: Bloody Birthday (1981) - dir. Ed Hunt

The second half of the double feature that I scheduled for my birthday last month, which began with 711 Ocean Drive (1950), was filled with a screening of the cult horror favorite Bloody Birthday. I didn’t know anything about the film, but based on the poster, I figured that at least it would provide some good chuckles. All you need to know is that three children born at the exact same time (Elizabeth Hoy, Billy Jayne, Andrew Freeman) form a miniature serial-killing squad in their town as they approach their collective tenth birthday. Much mayhem goes down as the astrologically aligned trio gleefully slaughters bothersome adults and teens with gruesome aplomb. Academy Award-winning actor José Ferrer has a fairly insubstantial cameo as the doctor who delivered the babies that grew up to be bite-sized murderers, but Susan Strasberg is a hoot as the bespectacled teacher whose strict classroom rules spell the end for her. There are better low/middle-budget horror films than Bloody Birthday, but as a way to ring in the twenty-seventh anniversary of my birth, it provided fiendishly satisfying entertainment.

We're making our first album, which will certainly be a bench mark for us.  Half the tunes are new, while the other half are what we like to call City Tribe "Classic."  They're some of the songs we first wrote as a group in 2010.  Half of them we actually released on our very first EP (which has since been swept under the rug) and the other half is brand new. Songs like "Broken Arrow" and  "Bury Me By The Shore" have never been released, so it'll be really nice to be able to print those two.

Andy Freeman, who helped us do our last self-titled EP, is with us again to guide us in the record making process.  He's a magic person and engineer to have around.  A really impassioned and enthusiastic personality, not to mention a player himself and a total music nut.  His ears talk.  Sometimes the group sits around while he and our drummer Cody have it out over far-fetched music lore.  

The upcoming record will probably be 9 tracks in all, which is short, but suits the modern attention span.  In no particular order, we plan on releasing the following:

We know we're the millionth band to come around, so all we want to do is make ourselves available to you, with the songs that have volunteered themselves from our spirits.

Are there any big-time curveballs or anything that fans won’t be expecting? There’s one song that we did called “One Last Song.” It starts out just like a classic Eisley song; it’s got a lullaby vibe, it’s very soft—and then right when you think it’s over, it kicks in with this drum fill and this kind of Portishead-type jam-out session with these vocals that are very Beatles-y. That was the first time we ever threw a curveball into a song and changed the time signature halfway through. That was really fun and challenging for us.

The producer, Andy Freeman, fields a few questions also and I think the man sounds like a saint. 1500 pounds of equipment he shipped to Tyler, Texas to record this EP. Now I am really interested in this release because it's obviously produced by someone who is wild about this band.
