12 Dead Franchises (At the moment )
So I am facinated by Franchises ,the continuing adventures of characters that can go on.....But nothing lasts forever ,and eventually characters pass into obscurity and folks stop seeing their movies
So when I say these franchises are dead,I dont mean "They got bad " I mean the franchises are more or less kaput ,no new films or TV shows (Video games ,comics and books are their own beasts). Some of these are good, some arent ,some I havent even seen
Ground rules
No new film or TV installments in 15 years
No characters who are public domain, for they belong to the people now and nothings stopping folks from re inventing them (I wanted to include Hopalong Cassidy and Charlie Chan but they are public domain,so you can do whatever you want with em,Dracula,Sherlock Holmes, etc )
Must have 3 films to be a franchise
So these are 12 dead franchises in no particular order that I wanna highlight
Nightmare on Elm Street-Lets start with one that might surprise some folks that I call a dead franchise but ....Yeah.The series about a dream dwelling killer hasnt had a new installment since the 2010 remake. Now some fans want at least one new film in the old continuity with Robert Englund.....But like Englunds 78 ,I frankly dont want him to be forced to do that makeup ,and I think Freddy vs Jason was a good capper to his time as Freddy Kruger. If it is to come back, then do a full reboot or just let it rest
Friday the 13th-Despite not being the biggest Friday fan I'm kind of surprised with how loved it is that this franchise is dormant (I hear it is rights issues ).Its a realatively simple killer in a summer camp set up. I think since there are 12 ,I feel at least a 13th film would be very welcomed
Conan -I am of multiple minds with Conan .I think the 2 Arnie moviesare good ,with Conan the Barbarian being one of my favorite movies and Conan the Destroyer is a lot of fun .In my heart of hearts,I wouldve loved to have seen one last Schwarzenegger Conan movie, with an old Conan......But that time might be past,Arnies 78 and Conans about to be public domain in 2 years anyway so Id prefer a reboot
Dirty Harry -the begining of the cop on the edge anti hero that showed Clint Eastwood want just a cowboy ,I've only seen the first film,I had to be reminded this is franchise and honestly kind of glad this is dormant
Jaws -What my brain goes to when I think of both dead franchises and unneeded franchises. The first film is very damn good and a self contained story of three guys fighting a shark.....We dont need sequels or a reboot, glad its dead ,especially since the sequels are bad
Airport -A series of disaster films with all star casts ,these were killed in 1980 by the spoof Airplane! and I dont think they will return
The Ernest series :a long running series of films starring the bumbling Ernest P Worrell.Reason why this one ended is simple:Ernests actor Jim Varney passed away and really theres no replacing him in the role
Pink Panther :One of the big comedy franchises of the 60's and 70's following Peter Sellers as bumbling Inspector Clouseau .Now this is an example of a franchise that kept shambeling after a natural end point,as Sellers died after the 6th movie.....But it kept going for 5 movies ,using stock footage for one ,a new protagonist for another ,bringing in a son of Clouseau fo the last of the original series before rebooting with 2 Steve Martin led films in the 2000's .There are talks of an animated film so that might work but other then that should stay dormant
Police Academy.About a bunch of folks at a Police Academy .....There are 7 of these movies...SEVEN.And yet no one talks about them and when I do hear people discuss them ,not fondly .I've seen the first.....Im baffled this is a franchise at all
Neverending Story:Based on a great book that was adapted into a great movie ,a pretty alright sequel and.....um...a pretty bad third movie .This is another one where Id like a reboot that is closer to the book cause there is stuff that didnt make the moviethat would be awesome to see in a film
The Thin Man :a mystery series about a movie couple, beloved by classic movie fans.First films pretty good ,havent seen the others. Its gonna be public domain in a few years ,so can be done however ya want
Andy Hardy -comedy series starring Mickey Rooney that back in the day was one of the big movie franchises that I have heard very little about by even hard core film fans ,I have seen none of them .This might be the most dormant of the ones discussed
