Adult Swim Co-Founder Andy Merrill Unveils That He Developed His Version Of A "Haunted Mansion" Series At Disney Television Animation But Got "Killed" Once Walt Disney Studios And Guillermo Del Toro Expressed Interest On Axed Film Adaptation.
Grim Grinning Ghosts almost came out to socialize at Disney Television Animation for a third time.
Andy Merrill one of the key veterans that founded Adult Swim at Cartoon Network as well proving the voice of the character Brak in Space Ghost Coast to Coast revealed that he attemped to pitch a animated series based on the beloved "Haunted Mansion" attraction at Disney Television Animation.
According to Merrill, a full pitch bible was written alongside a pilot script with Merrill detailing the pitch bible was very big however he would mention that the project was killed when Walt Disney Studios and Guillermo Del Toro expressed interest in making a new film adaptation of the ride but that project also got killed in the mid-2010s.
"I had an annual pass at the time and would drive to Disneyland and go on the ride over and over, taking mental notes of what I hadn’t seen. I included all of the international versions of the ride and the Florida one. I even wrote part of a pilot script. My show bible was pretty large. I worked for about 15 months. Disney kept stringing me along and then killed it when Guillermo Del Toro expressed interest in making a film, which never happened" --- Andy Merill
While packing, I came across a Haunted Mansion Lego set that I’ve never opened. I must have got it when I was pitching a Haunted Mansion sh
Based on the anecdote it seems that Merill's pitch was before Disney Television Animation tried to revive the idea in 2014 with two more attempts by Joshua Prett and Scott D. Peterson ("Phineas And Ferb", "Milo Murphy's Law") as a standalone television special for Disney XD and Shannon Tindle (Laika Studios "Kubo And The Two Strings", Netflix Animation "Ultra Man: Rising") as a mini-series also for Disney XD however executive changes at Disney Branded Television in 2017 shelved it's production, since then the studio has only touched the "Haunted Mansion" IP in the Random Rings and Chibi Tiny Tales short-series for crosspromotion material.
Merill is not stranger to Disney as he provided voice acting work in Disney TVA in shows like Gravity Falls as "Teeth” during “Weirdmaggedon”, Jelly Lips in the Disney TVA pilot “Club Sandwich” co-created by Craig Lewis (“StuGo”, “Wander Over Yonder”, Cartoon Network Studios “Chowder”, “Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends”) and currently is doing Pat Chatterly in “Kiff”.
Maybe one day the mansion's doors will open once again at Disney Television Animation with a new film or animated series for Disney+, beacuse we feel that animation is the next logical step after two failed attempts with live-action films.
Maybe hire Patrick McHale (Cartoon Network Studios "Over The Garden Wall") to do it or revive Del Toro's and Merrill's idea as an animated film.

My boyfriend got me the Space Ghost sticker bomb pack from Hot Topic (okay, so technically he bought it for both of us, but I digress).
Don't bother looking for Brak in these piles. My beloved gets his own section.
I also squeezed him onto my water bottle
