The Pillai family settled into Merrock in the 80s when Surya and Anya arrived in Maine. They had their two oldest with them coming from Florida. And then Aneesa came along in 1996. Merrock was a nice change of pace from a big city and things just fell into place.
Aneesa was an adventurous child, always following her older brothers around and always looking for an excuse to do something. A couple years later, younger sister Tara came along and Aneesa had a built-in best friend. School came easily as she naturally was drawn in to her classes. After high school, she decided to look at her options. The community college offered introductory classes for beautician degrees and certificates, so she took the first course and loved it.
She continued with her licensed massage therapy certificate and GED and graduated after a couple of years, beginning work right away. Azure became her second home as cliche as that sounded. It became more than just a job but a passion. A few years in and she decided to add on to her certification and take on her esthetician certification, which would make her an even better commodity at the spa.
Once she started offering services for both massages and facials, her clientele list grew, making her sessions more and more popular. It took up a lot of time, but the pay was good and the tips were generous.
Like many things, the good life felt too good to last. Aneesa got the call that her younger sister and brother-in-law were in an accident. She got to the hospital on time, but it was still too late. The young couple had left behind their house and two young girls. It was beyond comprehension that their younger sibling was gone. Now the question was about who would take care of the girls.
It had turned out that Tara was always prepared in many things in life. So it came to everyone's shock when Aneesa was named guardian of her nieces, Desi and Priya. Her older brothers were just as surprised and a bit angry at the decision, but Tara and Aneesa had always been close. That didn't mean there wasn't a drift in the family after. Aneesa had her own social life and enjoyed traveling, completely opposite from her sister settling down young and starting a family.
But she took on the responsibility. She had no idea how to be a guardian. She knew how to be an aunt, having done it for almost a decade. But to take things on full-time was something everyone would have to learn to adjust to.
