Wille frowned, confused. "Wait, I thought that was a joke."

"It was," Simon conceded. But then he leaned closer, conspiratorially, and lowered his voice, making Wille's traitor heart start nearly beating its way out of his chest. "But… what if it wasn't?" he asked, pronouncing the words very slowly.

Wilhelm and Simon are a pair of overworked, underpaid assistants who team up to gain their supervisors' favor by bringing them together for a joint venture. It might be the best worst idea they've ever had.

Madison: Correct.

Madison: He's trying to stop Simon from doing something.

Madison: She’s attempting to stop August from stopping Simon from doing something.

Mr. Englund: And what are you doing?

Madison: I am to distract you from stopping Sara from stopping August from stopping Simon from doing something.

Ms. Lilja: Ms. Eriksson, have you seen the Prince?

Sara: The Prince? Never heard of him.

Hillerska corruption

Remember how Felice was elected Lucia, without ever saying she wanted to? It was NOT the other students who voted for her.

"I'm so happy that Felice got elected to be Lucia. It means so much to me."

The principal has no real power. The school is run by the parents - they pay tuition, they're on the school board, they've gone there and they want everything to continue as usual because it serves their interest. They could probably get rid of an unpopular (with the parents) principal. And worse, if the upper class stopped sending their kids there, everybody who works there would lose their jobs.

The principal was fully aware it was important to Smysan that Felice was "elected" to be Lucia, so she made it happen.

Smysan would never have to ask directly, she would only have to say something like "I'm so looking forward to the Lucia celebration this year! I have such dear memories of being Lucia, just like my mother and grandmother." The message is clear and the school needs the parents to be happy.

This is Swedish corruption, soft power style. People say the royal family has no power, but that's not true. Soft power like this is a massive leverage. The former prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt (2006-2014) for the Moderates proposed to renovate Haga palace (actually a villa) for the crown princess couple. That bought him a massive in with the royal family, something that would increase his and his family's social status, even further increasing their career and financial opportunities through accessing that network.

Social status isn't determined by money, but by titles and generational wealth translated to culture. Understanding and following the rules of the upper class, and knowing when it's okay to break them is a must to fit in if you lack titles. @sflow-er has written an excellent post about how nobility works in Sweden!

Smysan Ehrencrona is VERY classy, she knows the rules to a tee and knows exactly how the system works. She has no need for gatekeeping, her social status allows her to be lenient and friendly with everyone. Because when she mentions something is important to her, people make it happen without her ever having to ask.
