Day 9: Two Harbors To A New Year
1/1/2018
Isthmus Cove, Catalina Island To Angels Gate Lighthouse
22.6 nm | 5 hours | Sail / Motorsail
I awoke before the sun and brought in the first day of 2018 watching the sunrise over the quiet Isthmus Cove. Meital and myself had coffee on a very wet deck and enjoyed the stillness.
The winds were forecasted to increase to 10 knots in the afternoon so we decided we would push off at around noon.
Heading ashore for some breakfast at the dinner we heard from Noah that they were out walking the dogs and would meet up with us.
We all went for a hike up the hillside towards the campgrounds.
Soon we were back on the boat preparing to leave. The winds off the island felt fresh so I hanked on the genniker, we thanked the Harbor Master on ch.12 and motored out of Isthmus Cove into the fog and marine layer of the morning.
We were sailing before Shiprock but the winds slowly eased and by 1pm I turned on the iron genny and we were motorsailing.
Meital took up her post on the cabintop on “Spout Patrol” hoping to see some whales
By 1:30 we started to see dolphins and it turned out to be a superpod. The pod was spread out in all directions with smaller pods of 3 or more dolphins lazily making there way but you could look to the distance from either side of the ship and see dolphin activity.
A number of them came by to say hello and have a look but none stayed very long.
At 3:30 the winds were still very light so I decided to get a shot of Trietia undersail at sea. I set up the drone on the place where I had launched her so many times before successfully and the moment she lifted off a gust of wind hit her and sent her slamming into the working sheet then up into the headsail then upside down in the water. We watched her sink very rapidly along with my heart,,,, and wallet for that matter. I was very bummed but I was glad it happened at the end of my trip and not the beginning. I was very disciplined about transferring all video footage from all of my devices, iphone, gopro, drone, canon, every morning, as I was certain some piece of equipment was going to end up as an offering to Neptune so I didn’t lose any footage at least.
From that moment on the winds continued to increase. Soon we were doing 5-6 knots SOG and by the time we passed the lighthouse we were burying the rails.
The channel was empty and the winds remained steady allowing me to sail almost all the way to the bridge before turning my motor on.
Night had set in and we were surrounded once again by the lights of industry and enormous container ships.
Triteia eased into her slip at 6:00pm and the trip was complete.

It is produced by the Long Beach artist group FLOOD and hosted by Angels Gate Cultural Center. soundpedro is not a music event.
