hayvenhurst, encino, july 1985
summer at hayvenhurst.
it really was the best time of the year, when you could just relax at the pool and tan, or eat some of the delicious food which they were grilling. especially when you had your boyfriend and best friend around you.
janet, your best friend had invited you over to one of their legendary pool parties. and obviously you said yes — how couldn’t you? also, your boyfriend jermaine was there, and you already looked forward to spending time with him.
you were gonna stay there for 3 days, since you lived like 1 hour away from hayvenhurst, and didn’t wanna drive there for 1 hour every single day, since you had planned on coming there a few more days anyways.
well, yesterday you had arrived at the hayvenhurst estate and got welcomed home by katherine and janet’s brothers — your boyfriend jermaine too, obviously. hayvenhurst really was your second home, your best friend and boyfriend lived there after all.
the day had been great, you and janet spent the day at the pool and tanned, gossiped.about the newest celebrity drama and ex boyfriends, and painted your nails in matching nail polish colors. later that day, there was a bonfire which was really comfortable, you’d sat close to jermaine, him keeping an arm around you the whole time — keeping you warm because it did get a little cold at night, even if it was july.
the whole night though, you could feel him looking at you, as if trying to stare holes into you and jermaine.
him. michael.
you had always had a good relationship with jermaine’s little brother michael, he was a really nice guy and you two got along well — often did stuff together with janet, since they were the closest of the siblings.
but ever since you and jermaine started dating, michael started distancing himself from you.
you found that really upsetting, because you two have been really close, and you didn’t wanna loose that bond you had. you started going over everything. maybe you changed after dating him? no. maybe he was jealous? no, why would he be? you’d still spent time with him of course. you really couldn’t make out why.
well, you went to bed that day, but couldn’t really sleep, because the thing with michael was keeping you up. eventually you did fall asleep, and had a weird dream about michael — which you couldn’t remember though. the only thing that you could remember was just that michael was in it.
the next day had come, and like yesterday, you were literally just spending your day at the pool with janet.
you were laying on your sun lounger, the sun burning your skin into a darker shade, as you took a few sips of katherine’s home made lemonade every now and then.
it was so calm out here, just the noises of jermaine and his brothers playing something in the pool, and the soft sounds of promise by sade coming from the record player.
suddenly, you heard a loud screech, until seconds later — you felt it. the water droplets landed on your skin in an uncomfortable contrast, which made a small squeal escape you. you immediately opened your eyes and saw the boys in the pool laughing their asses off.
jermaine had cannonballed into the pool, which had made the water splash over, and the droplets land on your and janet’s skin.
“ha ha, not funny boys!” janet remarked, crossing her arms over her chest, which made the guys just snicker even louder. you rolled your eyes. “yeah, real mature.” you sighed.
janet shook her head. “i doubt that they’ll ever grow up.” you giggled at that. true, those boys were still the same young boys from indiana, just that now — they were grown ass men.
tito chuckled. “come join us! the waters very nice.” you and janet looked at him. “after you guys just splashed us?” tito grinned. “well, you’re already wet now, aren’t ya?”
you shook your head but a giggle escaped your lips. you looked over at janet. “i mean, a little refreshment won’t do us any harm, right?” janet thought for a second. “okay, fine. but don’t expect me to participate in water volleyball, or whatever they’re playing.”
so you two stood up from the sun loungers, making your way over to the pool. you could feel jermaine’s eyes linger on your body, and marlon whistled at the sight. jermaine didn’t like that though. “yo, that’s my girl. keep your eyes to yourself.” marlon chuckled.
“alright alright, chillax.”
the rest of the afternoon was spent with you, janet, marlon, tito, jermaine and randy playing water volleyball — you’d convinced janet to join you guys. throughout the game, michael had perked his head around the corner from inside, looking at you guys play.
you had noticed him standing there, and waved him over with a smile.
“hey michael! come join us, the waters really nice.” you smiled at him, swimming over to the edge of the pool so you wouldn’t be in the middle of everything while talking to him.
michael quickly shook his head, rubbing his neck shyly. “no thank you. i need to continue working on the vocals for the song im currently working on, i was just here to get something to drink.” he told you.
you nodded, a little unhappy about it. you would’ve loved spending some time with him. but of course, his work was coming before his fun for him. typical for michael.
“well if you wanna come around lat-“ you were about to tell him that he could come around later and play with them, when jermaine had made his way over to you, wrapping his arms around your waist and pressing a kiss to your neck. “hey baby,” he whispered into your ear, before looking up and seeing michael standing there.
“yo mike!” he grinned, swimming around you to your side, leaning against the edge of the pool.
you looked back at michael, who’s expression was somehow.. different. he nodded at jermaine. “wanna come join us? we need someone else on our team, randy’s boutta leave.”
michael looked at him, way different than he had looked at you a few seconds ago. “no sorry, working on something right now.” he told him, kinda cold. “come on.. don’t be a party bummer.” he giggled at him.
you didn’t say anything, wanting to stay out of this conversation because you didn’t wanna tease michael about having to work and not wanting to play with y’all.
michael sighed softly. “i gotta go now,” he said, waiting a few seconds, thinking if he should say something else. but he didn’t. he just turned around and made his way inside again.
well. jermaine ruined that.
but obviously you weren’t mad at him, he was still your boyfriend after all. you turned to him and pressed a small peck to his lips. they tasted like chlorine from the water, which made you giggle a little.
“you two coming back here soon instead of flirting?” janet called out from the other side of the net, a grossed out look on her face.
you both looked at each other and giggled, before swimming back over to the others to continue the game.
a few hours had passed now, and you were currently in your room — they had a small guest room, which they basically turned into your room since you were visiting pretty often — and getting ready for dinner.
joe had turned on the grill, and there was gonna be a big barbecue for everyone. you could already hear some guys in the backyard through your window — maybe marlon and randy? you weren’t sure. you looked at yourself in the big mirror, looking yourself up and down.
you didn’t put on anything too fancy, just a small white ruffle skirt, and a white - blue striped tube top. your hair was in a bun and you just put on some makeup.
you got pulled out of your analyzation of the outfit by a knock on your door.
you walked the few steps towards it, turning the knob. you got met with jermaine. he looked you up and down, biting his lower lip slightly. “hey, wanna come down with me?” he asked, giving you a sweet smile.
you nodded with a grin, taking his hand, which he’d held out for you to take. you closed the door behind you before he started leading you through the big and gorgeous mansion, making your way downstairs and towards the backyard.
as soon as you stepped outside, you got met with the sight of janet sitting on the big table, waving you over. tito was at the grill, grilling some sausages and steaks, joe standing besides him to make sure he didn’t mess that up.
your eyes secretly roamed the area for michael, who you spotted a few feet away from janet, also sitting on the table, chatting with marlon about something.
you and jermaine walked over to janet. “hey you lovebirds.” she smiled. michael looked up at that, seeing you two standing there. oh he didn’t like that. he turned his head away from y’all to go back to talking to marlon.
you frowned at that slightly, but decided not to think about it. you sat down on the chair next to janet, jermaine right next to you. his hand slowly crept up to your thigh, resting there. you couldn’t help but feel butterflies in your stomach at that — gosh you really were inlove with that guy. “oh my gosh, you know what happened to me recently? i totally forgot to tell you about it.” janet spoke up, telling you some story about whatever important thing she forgot.
after about ten minutes passed, tito called out : “foods ready, guys!” and brought plates of steak, sausages, corn, garlic bread, salad, everything you could wish for, literally.
“gosh, i’m starving.” janet giggled besides you, filling her plate with all types of food there was on this table.
you chuckled but couldn’t agree more. you were starving too.
it could have been a great evening, the vibe was beautiful, the atmosphere was just amazing, until something happened that none of you really expected.
the music was still playing, the soft r&b sounds filling the air. it was truly beautiful. but then, the doorbell rang. not many people cared about it, but some people looked into the direction of the building. katherine stood up from her chair, making her way over to the house. “i’ll get it.” she said softly, walking inside.
she walked through the living room and kitchen area, towards the grant door, opening it. whoever got through here must be someone trusted, or else they wouldn’t even have gotten through the gates.
infront of her stood a girl. she was maybe about 5’7, had brown hair up to her waist, and had beautiful green eyes. “hi katherine, i wanted to give something to jermaine! is it okay if i come in?” she asked, batting her eyelashes at her.
the poor woman was completely confused as that girl pushed through her, her heels clicking on the floor. “uh.. who are you exactly?” katherine asked, a concerned look on her face.
she couldn’t be a groupie — they wouldn’t have let her in otherwise.
that meant she had been here before. but katherine has never seen her before in her entire life.
“i’m leah.” she said, giving her a big smile as she turned around. “jermaine’s girlfriend.”
katherine raised her eyebrows. jermaine’s girlfriend? but YOU were jermaine’s girlfriend. oh boy, that man was in trouble.
“oh boy.” katherine mumbled to herself as that girl just kept walking, reaching the backyard where everyone was sitting.
you were still sitting next to jermaine, giggling at something he said. your back was towards the door, so you didn’t see leah approaching y’all.
“jermaineee!” her voice cut through the laughter of everyone, as she walked over to everyone on her heels. the sound of her shrill voice calling your boyfriends name made you listen up. you turned around like everyone else, looking at the chick.
“hi baby!” she smiled widely and walked towards him. baby? did you just hallucinate or did she call your boyfriend baby?!
she stood in front of you and jermaine now, and the scent of her sweet perfume hit your nostrils immediately, and you instantly felt nauseous. you weren’t sure what it was, but the scent of the perfume made you wanna puke. she leaned down to press a big sloppy kiss to his cheek.
you just sat there, silent, completely shocked.
what. the. fuck.
who was this chick, thinking she could just kiss your boyfriend on his cheek and call him baby?
“excuse me? who are you?” you spoke up, a frown on your face. she stopped rummaging in her designer bag, slowly looking you up and down. “i’m leah. who are you?”
“y/n..” you told her, still frowning. “jermaine’s girlfriend.”
she raised her eyebrows at that. “jermaine’s girlfriend? honey i think you’re a bit confused. i’m his girlfriend.” you both looked at jermaine, who was clearly panicking.
his eyes were wide open, looking at you both, and his cheeks were hot.
“what do you mean? i’ve been dating him for 6 months now.” you told her, a hint of disgust edged in your voice. she huffed, looking very stunned.
“honey.. we’ve been together for like 2 months now, i don’t know where you came from, but that’s my man.” she said, her voice having something mocking in it.
gosh you hated her voice already.
you looked over at jermaine, the anger visible in your face. it was completely quiet now. no one was laughing anymore. just the soft sound of sade playing on the record player.
“what the fuck, jermaine?” you asked, louder than you wanted to. janet softly reached out, trying to grasp your wrist, but you shook the poor girl off, completely in a rush like state right now.
the adrenaline was pumping through your body. “i- love it.. it’s not what it seems like!” he spoke up, looking at you with big eyes.
you shook your head. tears were welling up in your eyes. tears of despair, anger, and just overall sadness. you stood up from your chair, looking down at him. “i don’t ever wanna see you again,” you sniffled out, before you just walked inside.
the whole world seemed to just fade away, nothing mattered anymore. the tears in your eyes were now falling, blurring your vision as you made your way into your room, locking yourself in it.
you threw yourself onto the bed, just sobbing into your pillow.
a few minutes passed, and you were just sobbing. you couldn’t believe what just happened — he cheated on you. you couldn’t understand why. was it because you were to ugly? not as skinny as that leah girl? too annoying? you didn’t know.
you kept crying into your pillow about everything, your mascara smudging onto the pillow.
suddenly, you heard a faint knock on your door. you sniffled, sitting up and wiping away the wet mascara smudges from under your eye. “who’s this?” you asked, trying to sound steady, even though the person who knocked must’ve heard your sobs anyways.
“it’s michael.” michael’s soft voice came from behind the door.
michael? what was he doing here?
you sniffled a little, standing up from the bed shakily, and walked towards the door. your hands were trembling a little as you unlocked it, and turned the knob.
as you opened the door, you got met with michael. he looked at you with a look of empathy and worry. “can i come in?” he asked softly.
you just nodded, stepping aside so he could walk in. you closed the door behind him, locking it again so no one could just enter.
he just stood awkwardly in the middle of the room, while you went back to your bed and sat down on it. at first, none of you both spoke up, just sitting there in silence.
but then, michael’s soft, honeyed voice cut through the silence. “are you okay?” he asked, softly stepping closer to you.
you sniffled a little and shook your head, the tears welling up in your eyes again. “i-i don’t know why he’d do that..” you told him, voice shaking. he nodded, which you couldn’t see.
“he’s a dickhead.”
you looked up at him, with big eyes. “what?”
“he’s a dickhead.” michael repeated himself.
you didn’t know whether to laugh or to scold him — you’ve never heard michael curse! but instead of doing either, you just chuckled and nodded. “he is.” you agreed.
“look,” michael said, and gently took your hands, kneeling down in front of you on the bed. “i don’t know what his problem is, why he’d do that.”
your heart started beating faster at the feeling of michael’s big hands holding yours, the warmth of them enveloping yours.
“he doesn’t know how to treat ladies, he should treat them with respect, and not use them like that.” you could hear the disgust in his voice at that, and that made your stomach flutter slightly.
michael was such a gentleman.
“he should treat a pretty girl like you like you’re supposed to be treated — with kindness and appreciation.”
you could feel your eyes starting to water slightly again. not because of jermaine — but how michael made you feel. he made you feel so appreciated and needed, like jermaine never did. i mean maybe at the beginning of your relationship, but not now. not at the end.
“thank you..” you sniffled, a tear now rolling over your cheek. he reached out softly, wiping the tear away with his thumb, cupping your cheek in his hand. “it’s okay.”
“i.. thank you michael, really. you’re a great friend.” you smiled.
friend. yeah.
