Just finished this very well written, captivating, very American, not uncontroversial Pulitzer Price winning book by Wallace Stegner about the marriage and life of two very different people and their circle of family, friends, colleagues, and others in the years after the Civil War in the American West, intermingled with how their grandson is coping with his own environment while he tries to write their story. And even though that writing takes place 50 years ago (and relates a story 100 years earlier), there’s still much to recognize and contemplate about humans, their characters, convictions, passions, and behavior. #wallacestegner #angleofrepose (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm7mBuupvCm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Angle of Repose, The Essay © 2017 Frederick J. Cowie, Ph.D. What is the angle of repose, other than the great title for the book that won Wallace Stegner a Pulitzer in 1972? Well, it’s basically (I am not a professional geologist or a school-trained scientist, so this is amateurish) that level, that angle, that place in elevation at which gravity alone can’t make the rock fall any farther down the hill. To go down more, the rock will need the input of some extra source of energy, say from wind, rain, earthquake, or something, maybe a hiker treading up scree which rests on its angle of repose slope. What has this to do with my life, with me at seventy-four? Well, I see lots of old people setting in on the deadly angle of repose of old age, giving up their dynamic energy and resting in the past, in the familiar feelings and sayings of their former lives—grumpy, dumpy, and humpy, feeling safe only in the company of fellow crab apples in an angle of repose crabapple pile. Me, no angle of repose life for me. I’m just beginning my THE BLUES MONKEY singing career, am off to my first Christmas Craft Show singing gig, and will be tutored in tablet-based, sound-guy, PA system management. Besides that, each day I write a poem, an essay (like this), and a piece of flash fiction (under 600 words), plus paint, wire wrap, or do something else creative. Why, because they give me that extra boost of energy that defies gravity, the grave and deadly gravity of the angle of repose. #fredcowie #author #professionalartist #angleofrepose #lastchancelifecoach #stressmanagement #helenamontana

I am much of what my parents and especially my grandparents were -- inherited stature, coloring, brains, bones (that part unfortunate), plus transmitted prejudices, culture, scruples, likings, moralities, and moral errors that I defend as if they were personal and not familial.
