For the past two months, I have been practicing Cuban salsa, or casino. I took salsa classes in the past, entertaining a tickle, but never finding a full-on laugh. A few weeks ago, a friend invited me to a Cuban salsa club and changed my life. She invited me to build dance into my daily. To use dance to communicate and build community. All vital dimensions I still lacked in my post-college life. I've been going back multiple times weekly.
But eventually at a salsa club, the DJ will play a song that requires a dance I don't know. I sit on the sidelines, envying those familiar with this slower, more sensual language. Casino has so enriched my life that I made a New Year's resolution to learn another dance style. This year, I will learn that sexy ass dance: Kizomba.
Kizomba originated in Angola in the 1980's, and is most popular in other Lusophone countries, such as Cape Verde and Brazil. The style is sometimes referred to as the "African tango" utilizing similar steps to accent percussive instrumentals. I bought myself an intensive this weekend. Four hours of Kizomba Saturday and Sunday. By the end, I'll go from the sidelines to anxiously awaiting that romantic sound.
