DAY 10 - 1/30/17   Theme: Movies

No beauty, just beast.

40 minutes.

Love, love, love this universe. Saw this with my dad in theatre when I was 13-ish. Scared the you know what out of me, in the best way possible. There are some GREAT comics based on the Alien canon. And, there’s a new movie one on it’s way… looking forward to it!

Day 6 - 1/26/2017   Blue Beetle after Miller

9x12, pencil, pen, gesso, gouache

Time: 2 hrs

This is an illustration of the Blue Beetle in the style of Frank Miller and colorist Lynn Varley. I find imitating artists is a terrific exercise, folding whatever I discover into my own creative arsenal. So, admittedly derivative, but total fun.

Blue Beetle has a long history starting in the late 1930′s. A contemporary of The Shadow, he’s been reinvented several times. Though DC acquired the rights in the mid 80′s and has done a lot with him, I like the old Fox comics version (no superpowers, just a mesmerizing blue scarab symbol and a stiff right hook). But I really dig the more modern googley- eyed goggles.  So goggles it is.

Excelsior! Oh wait, that’s Marvel. Marvel. Hmmmmm.... maybe next week?
