My next seemingly endless rant will be a line-by-line examination of Bruce Robinson’s “Angry All The Time.” But your last post was on an emo english band you say. How dare you think my taste in music could be in any way predictable.

This song tackles a subject that not all are brave enough to write about - the breakdown of a marriage. This is not a breakup song. This is more.

What is left of a husband and a wife

Love the way he sets this up. Like they’re just scraps of the people they were before.

with four good kids

Who have a way of gettin on with their lives

This really highlights that point when empty nesters have to look across the table and ask themselves if without the distractions they even know the person across from them.

And I'm not old but I'm getting a whole lot older every day

I love this because no one ever really thinks they’re old. We always think old is ahead of us. But he can feel himself aging exponentially as he watches his marriage crumble slowly.

I've got to get away

He already has gone crazy. He has already gone through the pain of banging his head against a wall trying to figure out how to save it, and know, in the middle of his own craziness, he sees the only option he has left is to leave. Here comes the best chorus you’ve ever heard in your miserable life.

The reasons that I can't stay, don't have a thing to do with being in love

Breakup songs are all about love. This is deeper. This is about real life. Love isn’t always the issue, and love isn’t all you need. Sorry Beatles. I think it also highlights that bond you have with someone after you build a life with them, that there will always be a form of love there, no matter what happens to the relationship itself there will always be attachment.

And I understand that lovin' a man shouldn't have to be this rough

Most cheap breakup songs have a clear hero and villain. This isn’t that. This is how it really falls, its not one person’s fault. He knows he is as hard to love as it is hard for him to love her. That made sense don’t think about it too much.

And you ain't the only one who feels like this world's left you far behind

Bitterness makes people bitter. He knows he has to get away and this line shows why, her bitterness is rubbing off on him. Sometimes we watch someone we love fall down this rabbit hole of destructive feelings and we resent them for leaving us behind.

I don't know why you gotta be angry all the time

Once again, as much as I love flowery poetic crap, the best lyrics are simple and honest. This line makes it seem like it’s so simple from his point of view. They have all these complicated issues and problems and broken promises but ultimately, it just boils down to her being angry all the time and him not knowing how to handle it.

Our boys are strong now, the spittin' image of you when you were young

This line is cool because I think naturally we compare sons to their father but here they are compared to their mother. It shows that he truly did love his wife and what she was, and he sees her in their sons and it reminds him of who she really is.

I hope someday they can see past what you have become

This hits hard. He knows what she was, and he hopes that someday their kids can see beyond what she is. It takes a while for kids to figure out their parents as humans, and maybe they don’t get along or don’t understand their mother, but he hold out hope that one day they’ll have the insight to see beyond her pain.

I remember every time I said I'd never leave

This is amazing. That is incredible. Because he isn’t leaving in a quick, impulsive way, and he is not pretending to be guiltless. The direction their lives have taken have pushed him to do something he never thought he would, and he became someone he never thought he would….

But what I can't live with is memories of the way you used to be

…and so did she. The pain of watching someone you love slip away while they’re standing in front of you isn’t unique to this type of relationship. He just cannot look at her every day knowing how much she has changed. It’s almost as if he loves who she was too much to stay with who she is.

And we’re back to the bomb chorus. This line is almost reassurance at this point, and it makes it feel like the situation is out of their hands. “I still love you, and I can’t stay anyway.”

It’s almost like he’s frustrated too. He feels for her being stuck with someone difficult to love the same way he feels for himself. Because their bond as a couple, who raised kids and built a life together, goes beyond emotion. It’s deeper than what they’re feeling right now. And he feels for her, being bonded to someone like that and at the same time feeling like you don’t know them and can’t stay with them.

You ain't the only one who feels like this world's left you far behind

This time it is like they’re in it together, like he’s saying “You’re not alone.” The last thing they are able to share is the breakdown of all they’ve shared YALL THIS SONG IS SO GOOD ugh

I don't know why you gotta be angry all the time

Now it’s almost as if he looks at her with pity. The way we ask why do bad things happen? Why do we have to go through hard things? Why don’t we always have the things we need? Why does she have to be angry all the time? Her anger became another tragedy he could’t understand.

Twenty years, have came and went, since I walked out of your door

This I appreciate because it gives us a resolution. The story has an ending.

I never quite made it back, to the one I was before

He is never going to be the same. There is always going to be a bond there, and losing that changes you. He can try to be who he was before but the world changed him to and there is no reversing it.

And God it hurts me to think of you

For the light in your eyes was gone

GAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

This is some high quality songwriting ok. He is grieving her, the same reason he had to leave is the same reason he can’t really recover. He lost her but she’s still there. He knows the tragedy happened and he can’t pretend like it isn’t a part of him too.

And sometimes I don't know why this old world can't leave well enough alone

Once again we find him asking “why?” “Why did this happen?” “Why couldn’t we make it?” “Why couldn’t she be happy?” We don’t know anything about what made her angry, but few people see angry people as victims, even though they almost always are. They are angry because of pain. They are hurt. He saw what happened to her and understands that the anger is not a part of her character, it’s something that happened to her. GUYS ITS SO GOOD.

The reasons that I can't stay, don't have a thing to do with being in love

Once again he assures her that he loves her, but it doesn’t matter. It’s just not fair.

And I understand that lovin, a man shouldn't have to be this rough

He feels for the pain losing the relationship is going to cause her. He still cares about her and he wishes it could be fixed.

You ain't the only one who feels like this world's left you far behind

Once again, he returns to his own feelings, as if he wants her to feel for him losing the relationship they way he feels for her losing it.

I don't know why you gotta be angry all the time

That last line ends on grief. There’s a sense of resignation, like he wants to understand but he knows it doesn’t matter, because it won’t change anything anyway.
