Do u think the younger version of yourself would be proud of you?

“…Yes. And… no. I-I don’t know....”

He rubs at the corner of his eye with the back of his knuckle, like it itches. Like it doesn’t belong to him.

“I think… he’d be glad I got out. That I’m breathing. That I made it far enough to see another day, even when I didn’t want to. I think that part would be enough for a while. I used to tell myself that just making it out would mean something.”

A pause. He folds his arms over his chest, not quite hugging himself, but not not doing it either.

“But he was also… very hopeful. Naïve, maybe. Stupid, definitely. I think he thought that if he got far enough away, things would… fix themselves. That there would be peace. Or safety. O-Or something....And I haven’t exactly found that.”

He looks down at his hands.

“I think he’d be proud I survived. But I don’t think he’d understand what it cost.”

A beat. His voice drops.

“And if he did understand… I think he’d be mad at me.”
