a scene that has been going around in my mind for a while, I don't know if I'll use it for anything, but I'd better write it down to free up some space in my head.
(check this, for more tim and family shit, Cassie's scenes are in that same universe.)
"It wasn't grief, no, it was my sixteenth birthday, it was the lesson."
Tim says this at the dinner table, his voice is very calm, he doesn't seem to care much about what he was saying, as if he was just correcting what had just been discussed, something about the stages of grief, he wasn't paying much attention until they mentioned the period of mourning for Bruce and how each of them got screwed, then everyone went silent and looked at him waiting for his story.
He had a lot of experience with grief indeed, but not with Bruce.
"I mean, I was in mourning and clearly went to a lot of questionable places because of it, but it wasn't grief that made me believe Bruce was alive, no, I've always learned quickly, it only took one lesson, I learned it and I'll take it with me for the rest of my life."
"What are you talking about?" Jason's voice is firm, not betraying his curiosity.
"Don't trust Batman." Tim drops the bombshell with ease and he can see how much it makes everyone seem lost and ready to fight him for it, because Batman is trustworthy. "I don't think that's exactly what he wanted to teach me, I think it was something about not blindly trusting your friends, but it kind of backfired. If Cassie tells me to jump into a burning volcano I'd ask her if she wants me to do a stunt, Batman asks me the same thing? I'll do tests to see if it's really him."
He can see, everyone is frozen, even Bruce seems truly shocked, he doesn't even get fazed, he knows that his training was an anomaly from the other students, he knows that the hard lessons are only for him.
"Drake, what are you talking about?"
"Don't worry Damian, I don't think he's going to teach you that lesson, you can trust him, all of you can, I'm already suspicious enough for all of us."
Bruce finds his voice "Tim, I don't…"
Tim looks at Bruce, straight at him "Look me in the eyes and tell me you're going to give him or anyone here the same gift you gave me when I was sixteen."
Bruce is speechless.
Tim smiles, just as he thought, the lesson was his alone, the hard ones were always his.
So no, he doesn't trust Batman, not even to die and stay dead.

A glimpse of you.
1.2k words!
dennis whitaker x social worker!reader
critique is appreciated but please be kind I’m new to this 🥹🫶 also will be very inaccurate to a real hospital setting but I tried my best.
You have been working in the Pittsburgh Trauma Center for a few years now, and you have seen every type of person. Healthcare workers especially, are very diverse. From know it all med students to doctors with a superiority complex, you really haven’t missed a thing.
Especially in a job that requires you to be as observant as you are. Working as a social worker could be tiring, but being able to bring some kind of ease into people’s lives after a life-changing event was really worth it. Quiet and reserved as you were, you preferred to listen and watch than to interact with other in the workplace. You still did it though, but when you really needed to.
That’s why, you heard about it so late.
“Remember the med students are coming today.” Dana’s voice ricocheted loudly across the hall. She wasn’t talking to you, still, you were curious. It’s not like it was anything new, med students? They come and go here, since it’s a learning hospital.
Later in the morning, you barely saw them. Well, you were busy with your own stuff, not really paying much mind to what the med students were up to. Catching glimpses of some of them, not enough to really identify them between the chaos of the ER.
Walking toward the break room to grab your second coffee of the day, you couldn’t help but notice a noise. Was it sobbing or laughter? This peaked you interest, and upon entering you saw someone you didn’t really recognize, figuring it was some med student, you thought maybe you could introduce yourself.
Closing the door behind you carefully, was when you realized this individual was the source of the noise. Sobbing or laughter, you didn’t wanna creep them out. Trying to not be to sneaky but also not too loud, your slow gait approached them.
“Hey—“ you said, then getting interrupted by-
“AAH.” A small, cracked scream.
Dennis Whitaker, MS4, that’s what you read in his badge when he turned around and you full on examined him with your gaze, staying calm not to scare him any further. Looking up again, you could see the fright in his puffed, red face. Eyes glassy, not quite crying, but really trying not to. You couldn’t tell if the redness in his ear and face was from the embarrassment or whatever he was dealing with. Still, you stay put.
After introducing yourself, giving him your name, you continued with—“Are you okay?”
You didn’t wanna embarrass him, but he looked like he needed help.
“Uh, um.” He swallowed. “Yeah, right. I’m okay, of course.” His eyes darted everywhere, doing everything to avoid meeting yours. His hands, kind of shaky, fidgeting with eachother.
“You don’t look okay.” You told him, man, first days are rough but, what’s happening here?
He stared at you, really stared at you for a moment. Then, waterfalls.
“Woah, woah—“ You helped him grab a seat, looking behind you to make sure no one was snooping.
Then, crouching, to make sure you could see him in the face, “I don’t need to know what’s happening to you if you don’t wanna tell me, but you’re not okay to go back there right now”
“So I just killed someone!” He blurted out, flapping his arms out in surrender.
Then, noticing the concerned look in your face you really tried to conceal, he retracted. “Not by choice! God.. I could’ve saved him.”
“Did you lose your first patient?” You didn’t wanna say it like that, but it escaped your mouth before you could word it better.
“Is it that obvious?” He snorted, he laughed! Progress.
Then, he was red again. Embarrassment this time. You were sure.
“Oh this is so—I’m deeply sorry.”
“Don’t be. This is what I’m here for. Not only patients. Be kind to yourself, it’s your first day here.”
He looked better, his fidgeting had stopped, and his face started looking less like that of a tomato. He sat there for a minute, taking it all in.
You stood up, looking down on him while he sat there. “You can always look for me, alright? You’ll know where to find me.”
Rapidly nodding, he sat there for a moment, seeing you march out of the room.
Something about him, stuck out to you, which was weird. You work with all kinds of people and it’s difficult for someone to stay on your mind like this. Was this really happening? Oh god.. you haven’t had a crush since the early years of college.
Some hours later, you realized you didn’t pick up the second coffee when you were in the break room, and it was really starting to take its toll on you. And still your head was filled with the thought of that guy from earlier. Convincing yourself you just wanted to know if he was okay.
Tired, you slumped on to your desk chair, when someone called out for you. Great!
“Some kid left this for you, sounds like you made a good first impression.” Some colleague of yours told you, then handed you a paper cup of coffee with something write on it.
“Thank you for all you do!! :)” Signed, DW.
That was written on the cup.
You wouldn’t mind getting used to coffee and cute notes…
With the shift ending in absolute chaos, you still managed to treasure that detail. It was dumb, he was just being friendly. Maybe you could get used to friendly.
In the locker room while getting your stuff, you heard some of your colleagues talking about meeting in a a park nearby and drinking something, to get the nerves off. You never really engage in after-work reunions, ironically you aren’t really social.
Someone tapped your shoulder. Hesitating, you looked behind you. It was him again. Hair messy, wearing a zip up over his scrubs and looking like he haven’t slept in days. He looked cute. Really cute. Oh god stop..
“Um.” He struggled, his cheeks getting pinkish, you could tell he was nervous.
“Thank you for the coffee.” You interrupted, to help him ease the nerves.
“Yeah- it’s nothing, really. Thank you for all you do. I have seen you all day with patients and, well, it’s clear that you love what you do.” He added, talking a little too fast. Lastly, “Especially when helping me. Thank you.” When he finished thanking you, you could see the tranquility in his tone. Like he had been waiting all day to tell you how amazed he was by something that was so simple to you.
“Well I mean I just caught a glimpse of you here and there today it’s not like I’m stalking you. Hah..” He was very awkward…very. But it was his first day, you remember yours like it was yesterday. You let it slide. And honestly, you were into it. Okay, stop.
“Don’t worry, I know what you mean.”
You could see the weight fall off his shoulders. You both stood there a little longer than necessary, not really knowing were to look. You could feel the heat in your cheeks too. You haven’t felt like this in a while.
“Well, uh—Dr. Whitaker, I’ll see you tomorrow!”
You finished, waving goodbye and making your way out.
“Just, call me Dennis! It’s not Doctor yet.”
That was the last thing you heard. Dennis. What a dork.
And so were you, smiling to yourself like a dummy just at the thought of him.
He knows she won’t make it ‘till the morning. All he can do is comfort his fellow freak of nature until she sleeps for eternity. The fleeting night that she lives will continue to stay with him. Her mother will move on and forget her, like they all do, but he will not. Maybe he is being comforted by the idea that he is not alone in his wrong existence more than he is comforting her. It doesn’t matter in the end, not to anybody but him.
Ouuuugghhhh first post, who’s this??
-I got really inspired by that one poem by Lura Gilpin titled The Two Headed Calf. With the idea that life can be fleeting I feel fits well with Kon (at least my interpretation of who Kon is) along with the whole thing of Kon being a kind of freak of nature an all that, and with the poem mentioning putting the calf on display due to it also being a freak is fitting.
There is a ton of angst material in this that could totally be utilized if I hat the patience to write a fic, but I do not ;-;
Also, does the lighting make any sense? No. Do I care? Also no. I hate darker environments because I struggle with making it not look muddy but who cares. And perspective sucks too but oh well-
Anyways, this was really fun to do, even though it took like 7 hours- heres the line art:
